P0172 and P0101 Codes

Featured Replies

Hi all,

My engine light has been lit for a while now and I'm in the process of figuring out how to fix it. P0172 and P0101 has been found. Any help on how to fix it would be greatly appreciated.

I had a broken breather pipe which I thought was the issue. It has been replaced but the engine light is still on. The codes however has not been reset after the breather pipe was installed. Would that solve the issue?

The car has just been serviced. However, it has rough starts and rough idling issues. This has been reduced since the breather pipe has been changed but its still there. Sometimes I can smell petrol while driving. I have seen on a youtube video that a bad fuel cap can result in the engine light being on. Does anyone have any experience of this?

MPG has also been reduced.

Thanks in advance for any help.

Change the Coolant temp sensor, it's the most common cause of poor starting & rough idle on all VAG cars. MAF sensor failure is also very common too. You can test that by unplugging it, & if the car runs better the MAF is goosed.

Use only genuine VAG parts for both these items.

Get the fault codes cleared, & go from there.

Thanks both for the response. I have been doing some reading since the post and these two possibilities came up. Other few things that I came up was clean throttle body, issues with catalytic converter and O2 sensor. Guess I will start with what you both have said. Hopefully the engine light will disappear.

Thanks once again. Will provide an update as it would help someone else.

Update: I have cleaned the MAF sensor and the Throttle Body. The initial problems with idling have disappeared and thank God the engine light is now gone.

However, the response of the car has not improve much mainly at lower speeds and when idle has white smoke. I might need to clean the Throttle body again as I did not manage to do a perfect job last time.

As I stated earlier. If you have the old black type coolant temp sensor fitted change it to the later revised green CTS ( Genuine VAG part only). It's an extremely common failure which causes the ECU to fuel incorrectly.
