Problem changing down at speed

Featured Replies

Hi all

I have just started having problems changing down gears its like when the car is going to fast to put in 1st but it happens in 3rd 4th & 5th you have to be going very slow for it to go in smooth it seems easier if you either double clutch or blip the throttle on down change

Anyone had this?

Car is 170 6 speed

Wear in synchro hubs in gear box easy to rectify but expensive, dealer will try and sell replacement gearbox, which of course is the best answer,

Have been in the motor trade since 1960, never allowed synchro to assist in gear cahnging, was taught to double de-clutch down, and have always done so. On up change unless in a desperate hurry always enter neutral and slow gearbox to engine speed then change up.

Not grandad driver, can up and down change still faster than boy racers trying to show off, mind you they are good for repair shops.

One vehicle of mine had original clutch brakes gearbox differential after 200,000 miles so even though double declutching up and down uses double clutch operation it does not cause extra wear to the clutch if you drive properly.

Do you think it will be covered under warranty?

Take it to your local dealer should be replaced or repaired under warranty, unless its the clutch then i expect you will have to pay.might be wise to take the car into a clutch clinic first see what they say, if they say the clutch is okay then you will know where you stand with the dealer if they say its the clutch.

As Bill correctly says.

Ive had this problem before on my old Ford but it was the clutch rather than the gearbox.
