Vibration at around 4k rpm

Featured Replies

Had this problem for a little while but cant seem to figure out whats up so ill open the floor to you guys

There are no fault codes on the car and no engine management lights

When the car hits about 4k rpm there is alot of vibration and the engine note is louder....this is both when in gear under load and when no under load (neutral) its only at a very specific rpm as well. Above 4k it doesn't vibrate and under it it doesn't either.

The past week i have noticed this more as i have been motorways driving more and i normally use cruise control and put it on when the speedo is bang on 70mph on the sat nav....now it used to cruise at this in top gear at a little under 3k rpm (say 2.8/2.9k)....now its just over 3k rpm(3.1/3.2k)...for some reason the car is working harder to maintain that speed

any clues on this one and any course of action?

Thanks

Alex

Are you saying that at the same speed in the same gear the car is revving higher? Different tyres?

My vrs does the noise/vibration thing at 2150rpm, mine is because of my 3" downpipe, must be something to do with volume of gas passing at that rpm causing some sort of resonance. It's made worse if you have polybushed dogbone etc.

same tyres as have been on the car since i got it....never used to vibrate at that rpm and now it does started about 2 months ago never thought much of it at the time as you only hit that rpm when accelerating vibration is there at that rpm under power or off power...

and yes at the same speed and same gear the car is revving higher

wouldnt be the coil packs would it? i know when the old ones packed up people had similar problems but the eml always came on...

If the car is doing different revs in same gear for same speed than it was. There is an issue with the crankshaft position sensor (I think this gives the reading to the tach?) or the clutch is slipping (not likely)

Easy to fix? Expensive? Any way to confirm cus there is no eml light or error codes

its deffo puzzling tbh

I'm basing that on the fact that it is impossible for your engine to rev higher than it used to without clutch slipping or incorrect tachometer/speedometer reading. Couldn't put a price on a fix based on that.

Did you get it scanned for fault codes by a reputable mechanic? sometimes the cheaper diagnostics software can miss things..

nope my laptop haha may have to take somewhere and get them to dig deaper

VCDS lite? That can't do a proper full scan so might be the problem. What wheels and tyres are you running? Somebody might be able to say if the speed - RPM is any different to theirs. I have 205 55 r16 tyres but yours are prob 17s.

225 45 17r tyres...yh and my shark remap tunebox thing both come back without codes

dog bone mount or engine mount maybe?

going to take it in and see if its the mount that is the problem hope they find out what it is
