2012 Monte Carlo brake issues, ABS intervention

Featured Replies

Hi Guys,

I have had a search though this forum and cant seem to find anybody else with this issue.

Sometimes at the end of a long steady brake application you can feel and hear the ABS intervene, its as if the ABS modulator is priming the system due to loss of boost pressure or something like that.

Has anybody else had this issue with their car? Id just like to find out before I take the car back to my dealer.....

Many Thanks

Ed

No issues at all with my brakes and I've done 11K miles from new in the last 6 months!

Welcome to the forum.

Ed,

what sort of prolonged braking are you talking about, from what speed?

Do you not think the ABS is just doing what is required of it, stopping you from locking up the brakes,

having loss of traction and not stopping in control.

'Antilock Brake System'.

Have you checked visually the Brake Fluid level?

If you feel the Brakes are not as they should be, its best to get them checked.

Brake Pad Wear, Disc condition, rear shoes as well as the Fluid.

If you car is a 1.2TSI they don't produce enough vacuum to allow the correct amount of servo assist, the answer to this was to allow the ABS unit to store hydraulic pressure and use it to assist the drivers braking effort when the vacuum level drops. The kind of braking you describe will cause this function to kick in I think. I would imagine the 1.6 Tdi CR may have the same system but will check and confirm that.

I have a 2011 monte on 35k not noticed any braking issues.

I've got a 1.6 CR TDI Monte Carlo, just done 9,500 miles.

I've noticed this too, I found it under a firmer brake, always the first of the journey, like you say as if pressure just hasn't built up.

I'm a VW technician and got my car new from the Skoda dealer under the same company.

I've had some hairy moments due to this, one ending up in me bumping someone (luckily very lightly!)

I've got more and more sick of it recently, I've also got bored of the handbrake being slack, 7-8 clicks, not the correct 4!

The had it's 1st service, done at the dealer (not myself) as it's on service plan, so I asked them to adjust the handbrake down a bit, main reason is the centre console catches at about 6 clicks.

Kindly they did free of charge, now at a firm 3-4 clicks and a lot better.

My drives since I have noticed the brakes are a lot more responsive! Pedal going firm almost immediately and a lot more trust in them :)

Like I say, I've been a VW technician for over 7 years since school and know the the Polo based cars are usually poorly/overly servo assisted giving un-responsive brakes, and from driving a modified mk2 Golf daily for 2 years with very very good brakes to jumping into a brand new Fabia and finding the brakes suspect even on a good engine it threw me a little.

Anyway, I'd highly recommend you adjust the handbrake if you think yours is slack like mine, you might find this makes a very good difference.

I just put it down to the excess travel of the shoes before they bite the drum, it felt like ABS kick in to me too, but it isn't as this would flash your ABS light.

This is my third Skoda car and ABS light never flashed while ABS working on hard breaking.

If you are going down hill use engine brake in low gear as keeping foot brake on will over heat plus cause brake fade

Greek market dash maybe different, Uk cars do :)

Sometimes its best to read the 'Owners Manual'. Page 139-141.

Brakes, Brake Booster, Brake Assist. ABS etc

'A warning light comes on if a fault occurs in the ABS system' see Page 32.

I don't think so, but whatever.
