Octavia combi 4x4 or Yeti 4x4 ?

Featured Replies

Hi Guys,

I was on the market for yeti 4x4 2.0 TDI (110KM) but it is a little bit too small for me to be honest

and got just an offer for octavia combi 4x4 1.6 TDI (105KM) ambition, off road package, fully loaded

for price less then a Yeti. Octavia combi boot is enormous but one concern I have is the ground clearance.

I know the offroad package will raise octavia but do you know how much? Yeti has nice 180mm clearance,

will octavia be at least 160 mm ?

Another question is the engine, is the 1.6 TDI any good? no known problems? looks like it's very efficient.

thanks

No issues with ours, but if you're carrying a bit of weight in the rear then you may find the overhang from the rear axle results in the nose tending to point skywards. Have broken one rear spring already (fixed under warranty) and now have 'MAD Helper Springs' fitted, which I'd thoroughly recommend.

The boot is a big advantage over the Yeti, especially if you have the raised boot floor, (can be purchased after market), which makes for a good place to hide the stuff you need but are not likely to use often. (Snow chains and other winter 'essentials' in my case).

The 1.6 TDI CR engine is okay, low to high 40's mpg depending on how you drive/what you carry, but when loaded up the acceleration can be sluggish so driving style adjusted accordingly.

Ground clearance isn't as good as in the Scout, whose larger wheel/tyre combo gives it an extra few (7?) mm over the standard 4x4. (Scout has more robust under body protection also). However, the "off road package" isn't available in the UK, which as you mentioned both it and "km" I'll also assume you're likewise not, therefore I'm not sure if the extra 7mm clearance and 'Scout' under body kit forms part of that "off road package".

Only issue I've had with the engine was the water pump leaking coolant, a known fault which was again fixed under warranty.

Road noise can be an issue, but in my case a decent (6 monthly) full lazer geometry and some sheets of sound proofing (Dynamat) under the rear seats/in spare wheel well sorted that.

Have taken ours from Scotland as far as Sweden, Slovenia and Italy, during both summer and winter, with roof box and (detachable) towball mounted bike carrier, with no issues other than the soft rear end; which the helper springs resolved.

Personally, found the seats in the Yeti (front and back) uncomfortable and hated the look of the join between the parcel shelf and rear seats. Given the Yeti's smaller boot, on an extended family trip it'd be a nightmare and trying to sort out a roof box on a Yeti would not be pleasant, whereas on the Octy it's fine.

Had the car since Feb 2011 and 48k (miles) later still very happy with it, but given my time again I'd opt for the 2.0L engine.

OP - Which country are you based in as the rough road pack may be specific to you in terms of details such as raised ride height?

Also, just to say, from experience, you can fit a lot more into the Yeti than you'd expect. We use it for a family Euro trip each year. So far its succesfully visited France, Germany, Switzerland, Austria, Spain, Italy, Slovenia, Croatia, Slovakia, Hungary... think you get the idea. Its only when its full of passengers that we struggle but with three and the removal of 60% of the rear bench, its like a van in there! It also has chassis lashing points at the base of the B pillar so everything can be secured from the footwell of the rear seating area, back to the rear of the boot. :) Roof box isnt an problem either - we simply open the Yeti's door and access it by stepping onto the sill. Comfort - its the best car ive had including the Mk2 Octavia. Done a few 13 hour driving days and I get out feeling fresh as I started.. almost! So it is workable. Ultimately though, if one of the primary reasons for buying it is boot space then the Octavia wins by a good margin.

thanks guys for opinions, I just realised that after folding seats yeti has more space then octavia combi but oriented vertically whereas octavia horizontally.

Yeti 1760 liters versus octavia 1620 l ... not that bad as I thought but still I need to carry 2 mountain bikes and I don't want to be force to remove front wheels.

p.s.

I'm in Germany at the moment.

Guten abend, you've hit the nail on the head with what you say. :)

What constitutes the "off road package"?

What constitutes the "off road package"?

I was told under engine covers plus 24mm added to ground clearance.
