Oil leak nearside front

Featured Replies

Just noticed on the drive a patch of oil under the car when I pulled back in this morning and looked underneath to find the plastic underpan covered in oil on the nearside. Looking down it seems to be below the pulleys but where it is actually coming from I don't know.

Any ideas what can leak this side of the engine?

IF it's coming from the pulley, it could be something gruesome like the crankshaft's oil seal, or the sump gasket at that end. Such failures are not common.

BUT if it's collecting down in the engine bay under pan, it could be coming from anywhere above the pan.

First thing to try is to take the under pan off, clean any oil off the underside of the engine, then check again later, maybe after a brief run to get the oil warm, thin and under pressure. The car will run perfectly happily without the under pan in place.

Fingers crossed, it will be something simple like a loose sump plug or oil filter, which a quick tightening-up will solve.

Good luck with it! And let us know how you get on.

It's under warranty! Take it back to your dealer asap! Surely no need to start crawling about beneath the vehicle yourself?

All the best,

Dave

Nearside is the passenger side & only thing in this area is the gearbox,do you mean the offside if you say near the pulleys? id check & top up your engine oil if low & book it into the dealers as it should be covered by warranty, have you had any work carried out on the car recently?

Didn't notice your car is still under warranty - totally agree with the other posters above on the warranty approach.

Thanks everyone, yes it is the offside, don't know why I said nearside

The car is still under warranty, but I like to have an idea of where it can be coming from, before I get the ' We cant find anything' or thats not covered under the warranty'.

Had a service 2 months ago, but thats it. Checked the oil and its OK. I have been away for the weekend and came back on Sunday and parked up. Then yesterday morning noticed the oil patch, although its not as bad this morning. As usual, I am due to go on holiday to France next week, and usually the exhaust drops off or something goes wrong just before I am due to set off.

My first instinct is to crawl under to see if anything is obvious, but with the cover on, as someone said the leak could be anywhere. It certainly seems to be coming from below the pully and spraying forward as the bottom of the radiator is oily and black, and then it is running from the front of the guard through a hole with a rubber bush above it( cant get right under to see properly) and down to the rear of the guard.

Booked it in for Thursday at the main dealer.
