Premature Starting!

Featured Replies

Hi,

Wondering if somebody could help. I've got a 2005 Octavia 2.0, and have a strange starting issue.

Basically, I'll put the key in, turn 1 click, but instead of just turning on electrics etc it starts the car! I don't have to turn the key any further.

Worried it may cause problems with the glow plugs if it's firing before they've warmed up initially.

I've repeated it a few times and does the same every time - Will try again in the morning, perhaps when the engine is fully cold.

I've tried searching for other posts, but can't seem to find anything similar! Seems to be very weird, assume it's something shorting in the barrel perhaps? Anybody else heard of this?

Appreciate any help.

Gaz

HI Gaz, welcome to briskoda.

That does indeed sound odd. I've never read of anything similar but hopefully someone will be along shortly with a solution.

Hi Gaz, the glow plugs will be fine, they usually stay on for a little while after the car has started anyway.

What I would be more concerned with is the fact that turning the key to the ignition on position causes the starter to engage, then what is stopping it from staying engaged after the engine has fired. I don't want to alarm you but I have heard of instances where the starter has remained engaged, been turned over by the engine and then been burned out, on occasion even caught fire. This is something I'd want to get sorted ASAP.
