Intercooler/aircon radiator

Featured Replies

Can someone please tell me what the front intercooler is for in the engine bay. there are 3 in total the front one being black, the middle silver and the back one black and silver. I have an annoying rattle coming from my car (see signature) and thought it was the suspension because it only happens over bumps. It has been in to the garage about it but they couldn't replicate the fault (how hard is it to drive over some uneven tarmac????) and its been really annoying me ever since it started so I jacked the car up to make sure that everything was ok underneath it. I was tapping the undertray when I heard the same rattle but it only happened when I tapped the undertray right under the intercoolers so I had a look through the front grill and low and behold the frontmost intercooler is loosing its bottom most row of matrix. It looks as if it is delaminating from the rest of the intercooler and has delaminated more than 3/4 of the way across the intercooler. I have checked the coolent level and it is sitting just above the min mark but the engine had just been turned off less than 15 mins earlier so it was still hot which is making me think that it could be leaking slightly as well because when the coolant cools I would expect that it will be below the min mark. I will check the level tomorrow and take it straight to the dealership in the morning. The car is a 62 plate vRS Blackline CR diesel for everyone on their moblies.

Do not know in which order but. Engine coolant, engine oil and refrigerant for aircon. Following the pipes /hoses to their various components should assist as to their purpose.

The very first one (as you look head on) is the black one. Will more than likely have a sticker with "Modine" on it. That is the condensor for the air-con system.

Middle one is the intercooler (so linked to turbo and air intake system)

One at the back is the radiator for the coolant system.
