I've had the Wavetrac diff fitted for a couple of weeks now. I still haven't managed to get out into back roads in the wopwops (as the Kiwis say) for a proper drive without the family but I have had a chance for some normal driving and a few quick blasts.

Out with the old:

I took the gearbox to a local specialist to get the diff fitted. Not cheap but I'm glad I did.

This is what put me off:

I also fitted a new G60 clutch and single mass flywheel.

Anyway enough photo whoring for now.

I'm really happy with the clutch - lighter than stock but feels similar to use.

The LSD - well I'm still getting used to it but it definitely feels much better. Generally the car seems more planted and definitely pulls much better around corners.

It works fine with the ASR on but feels a lot better with it off.

The car is nowhere near as eager to wheelspin now when accelerating.

It can be a bit cheeky if the wheels aren't straight and the turbo kicks in - you have to correct it quickly or it will just go where the wheels are pointing, which is interesting if they're pointing towards a 3m drop into the sea with no barrier as they were the first time I noticed this!

I also had an interesting situation on a straight road where the passenger side wheel had a load of loose gravel underneath it and the driver's side wheel didn't. I accelerated and the car just set off, no drama, no gravel flying. With the old diff the power would have gone to the gravel side and maybe chipped my paint :D

Thanks again to Rob at W8 for supplying the diff at a very reasonable price and for helping me with confirmation of the correct model.

If you're thinking of fitting one, VW changed the size of the final drive ring gear by 1mm on all gearboxes manufactured from 1/3/2004.

Mine was manufactured 15/3/2004 so I was somewhat concerned The only way to be 100% sure is to have the gearbox completely in bits!

It all turned out well, whew! :D

And apologies to Mark if this influences you in any way or ends up in divorce.

I think this is another mod that makes the car like it really should have been from the factory - if it wasn't a "budget" range model. It's certainly not a cheap mod though, especially if you're paying someone to do the technical bits.

Glad we finally got there in the end Rob :)

Good news Rob!!!! How do you like the single mass conversion???Is there any difference on how it feels compare to the OEM???I am going to do it when my OEM dies....

I love my single mass conversion, lighter than stock and silent :)

As for the wavetrac, 110% agree it should have been fitted as standard, totally transforms the car, even more so on the track, but on the road it still makes a massive difference :)

It does take a while to get used to the steering though, especially after jumping out of a car that doesn't have an LSD into 1 that does lol.

It is shocking though that buy the time you have bought the diff, fitting kit, clutch, flywheel and paid to get the diff fitted, you could have bought a 2nd vrs AND had some change :o lol.

The diff is the single best thing you can get for any fwd car, pointless having the oomph if you can't get it down!

As said it is bl000dy expensive, I remember when I did mine and the 6speed conversion, I thought I was mad at the time, but it was the best thing I ever did!!

Watch it in the wet Rob, when they break away, they do it spectacularly!!!!

Steve

A wavetrac is like you have your very own rail road being laid out in front as you drive.

It's great - exactly as Cossie1 says - lighter than stock and feels great.
