Used Yeti - pitfalls?

Featured Replies

Hi all

Been looking at getting a used 4wd Yeti paying around 10k. At this price I'm finding mileages around 70-90k on 3-4 yr old models.

How well does the Yeti carry higher mileages? Is there anything to look out for on the 1.8 tsi or 2 litre diesel? Are either of these cambelt or are they chain?

Thanks for any advice.

Steve

Mileage is not an issue, my car is 26 months old with 100K miles so far, it will have the timing belt changed at 140K miles and so far I have had a heated seat pad replaced.

If you can find one with history buy it.  Mine is a 170tdi Elegance 4x4

The 1.2TSI 1.8TSI are chain

The 2.0TDI are belt

What about the 1.4 TSI? Chain as well?

Wow,thats some mileage for a 2 year old car,how long do you intend to keep it for?

I will order another car in August 2014 and the Yeti will stay with me until the new car arrives, will have about 135-145K on it when I say good bye

Don't think so, as far as I know the 1.2 and 1.4 both have chain driven camshafts

I'd have a good look at the paintwork, especially the sides, door bottoms and edges.

Chips on the bonnet and windscreen.

Check the plastic protectors are on the rear doors.

Older EA113 type petrol engines as in the Yeti have chain, newer EA211 engines introduced with the Octy III have belt.

There are a number of things to think about on older Yeti's, the main one being stone damage to the rear doors. Protective foils were not introduced as standard until August 2010, although most cars fitted with the RRP had them before that time.

So many older cars can have paint damage to the rear doors, unless they have been repaired and had foils applied.

Engine wise with the 2.0 TDI 140 look out for cars built from the middle of November 2009 as they have the improved CFHC (engine code) engine and the 170 was updated in May 2010 to the CFJA motor.

Also in August 2010 a new front assembly carrier was introduced, which IMHO has slightly improved ride and handling over the earlier cars.
