Reverse Camera Help

Featured Replies

Hi guys. My reverse camera finally arrived from Hong Kong and I am going to fit it along with my new Headunit this weekend.

Just after some help really. As I'm a bit of a novice but I don't mind getting my hands dirty :)

Headunit loom has this connection for reverse camera:

Camera has these connections:

Any ideas how I have to wire this up?

There will be sockets on rear of unit itself for all the plugs off camera. The reverse signal wire needs to be patched into the reverse light wire of the switch on I think the gearstick somewhere

You need to bring a 12v feed when the car is in reverse to the purple wire on the head unit. This is to tell the head unit the he car is in reverse and will bring up the display from the camera. I took mine from the near side tail light and ran a wire along under the trim at the doors, across the back of the glove box and into the head unit.

The wire with the two yellow plugs needs to go the same way, from the camera to the head unit. This is the feed from the camera to the head unit. Plugs into the yellow wire on the camera and there will be one on your head unit too for a reverse camera.

The wire with the black plug and red and black wires is the power supply to the camera. Red = 12v black = earth/ground. You can take the 12v from the same place as you take get feed for the head unit, the wire at the taillight that becomes 12v when the car is in reverse. There will be a earth at the taillight also. This plugs into the red plug on the camera.

The red and black wires on the camera are for the led light on the camera. These need to be wired into the number plate light. The plug will be there from the light you are replacing with the camera.

The hardest part is getting the wires out through the rubber that goes from the boot lid to the body!!!

......remeber what ever you do to put some fuses in your connection to avoid a potential short circuit if something gets connected wrong ,you would not want your car catching on fire just to save a bit of money so the first thing i advice is the FUSES ,there are numerous posts here ,just take your time better safe than sorry :) and test your equipment at home to be sure camera works with a battery and plug it in your tv

Thanks guys. Looks like this will be beyond my capabilities to install. I don't really need it, just was a bit of a novelty to have.

So I will sell it on.

Matt, don't give up. It's a lot more simple than it seems.

Was going to ask why you would need a reversing camera in a fabia? Same with parking sensors but each to their own I suppose

i have both camera and rear parking sensors if i had to choose 1 i would go for the rear beeping sensors :) i think the rear camera is good to have to make sure there are no kids or short poles behind you when reversing, anyway i would not recomend someone with no electrical knowledge and not knowing how to use a volt meter to try anything that has to do  with the cars circuit, at least get a freind thats has the knowledge to hepl out or make sure you are doing it right, not hard if you know what you are doing.

It prob is but I really don't have any idea with electrics. I might see how much a local auto electrician would charge to wire it in for me. But if it's more than £20 it's not really worth my while.

I don't need one, just a novelty idea really. I've never had/needed one in any of the cars I've had. I just like my gadgets haha.

Yes knowing my luck I'd brick the ecu or pop some airbags or something haha.

wow, My MkI Fabia Elegance 1.9TDi PD has a mirror so I can see what's behind. Have you converted yours into a 17.5 ton tipper lorry?

1.9TDi Elegance? Never heard of it.

No just a standard Fabia vRS.

In Race Blue.

With Leather Seats.

Oh and there is a little number stamped into the front two seats. Not sure what that's about though ;)

yeah, not many people have :( They're the ones that have heated front seats as standard and a lever to open the boot without getting out of the car, turbo's that don't go 'pop' yet still make 125hp and 220 ft/lb unmodded, unlike the far inferior MkI Fabia vRS's with their pig-to-keep-clean seats).  SE's may be excepted in some cases ;)

The wiring is very simple. Two wires to be spliced into the reverse light loom. Running the wires to the head unit is more tricky but not impossible. Just give yourself loads of time.

As I said above the hardest part is getting them true the rubber going from the boot lid into body. If you have it all set up and the wires run to the back of the taillight it would be very easy to get an auto sparky to finish it off if you think you cant crimp on a scotch lock :P

When you are after splashing out on a very decent head unit you may as well fit it and have all the functions working. I never depend on mine but it is nice to have it fitted, once the back of the car gets anyway dirty you wont see anything much with it anyway!!

If you need any more info send me a pm and I'll be glad to help.

Heated seats? I love the feel of cold leather in the mornings! Oh and they clean with a wipe.

My turbo is fine at 75k *touches wood* Still works well and makes 140bhp and 270ft/lbs of torquiness from the factory.

As for the lever to open the boot, that's a lot of hard work. Also not quite sure why you would want to open the boot if you are not getting out of the car? I prefer to push the button on my key fob to open mine ;)

Do these Elegance models you speak of have factory fitted Cruise Control, ASR or 6 Disc Changer? Can you get one in Race Blue (the best colour) ?

So that my serf can get the cases out when it's ****ing it down :dull: I also have a three button remote :hi:

* not worth it IMO as ****s in front brake and it's a sign of a lazy, less dynamic driver but it was a cheap option.

** Yes

***Got one in the garage. CD's are a bit 'old hat'

**** No. You can't. But Cayenne Orange Metallic is less showy and easier to keep clean

:)

Cruise Control not worth it? I think it's the best feature on my car. When your travelling 4/5 hrs in the car on motorways regularly, it's a godsend. Wouldn't really say it's the sign of a lazy driver either. Well no more lazy than a lever to open your boot so you don't have to get out :P

I have a 6 disc changer, I didn't say I use it.

Cayenne Orange Metallic sounds nice. But it's no Race Blue on a Mk1 vRS. SE.

Its a small hatchback. :S

I'll concede to Race Blue being the best, if not the rarest colour ;)

Wow, this thread got bitchy quickly..........

Matt, Man up and get it wired in! Only way you will EVER learn! Looking forward to the pics aswell mate!

Indeed. It's dead simple....

You can't really go wrong. Hardest part will be hiding all the cables, and that's not that tricky.

Going from memory, you just run a wire to that purple cable from lets say... The reversing light bulb... That sends a signal to the stereo to change to the camera mode, just like the remote cable for an amplifier/sub.

The camera needs power so wire it up to a positive point somewhere, ground the earth, and then run the yellow cable to the head unit which is the video feed and plug it in.
