Columbus Map Update: Dealer 'Plug & Play'?

Featured Replies

I'm having the cam belt & water pump & DSG oil change done on my July 09 Superb at RRG dealer of Bolton at national pricing rates on Wednesday and on my Fabia the following day ( minus the DSG work)

I also asked for the latest map update for the Columbus unit to be installed and was quoted £50 which is £50 more than some have paid but a fair bit less than others so am happy to pay if I get the latest maps and it all works ok.

When I asked what version maps they have got the chap said they won't know until they plug the unit into the Skoda system. I also asked if there was any chancy of waiving the update fee because of the value of work. He was amenable to this if it was a 'simple plug and play job' (his words) but he can't promise because they have not done one before.

That remark has concerned me a bit, so I'm just asking:

(1) Is it just a 'plug & play job' when carried out at a main dealer?

(2) What map version number can I reasonably expect?

(3) Would I also need a firmware update to accommodate the latest map.

(4) What map number is my version 7672, I'm guessing 6 or 7.

My Columbus details are: Unit: 3T0035680B,

HW: H11

SW: 3974

HDD: 7672

Also, has anyone here had any dealings with RRG of Bolton as I haven't and am now 'trusting' them with some work which could prove catastrophic if carried out incorrectly.

I'm feeling a bit stupid now asking these questions after I've booked them in rather than before.

Any advice and info would be really appreciated.

Just FYI: West European maps v10 8048 are released recently - those take double layer DVD (sized 5+ Gb), sold for some 199 Euro. As to torrens, I believe there are already some (but not as frequently met as for East European v10 8049).

Here is Eart Europe link on German site (sorry for that - navigation to West is not quite obvious in German for me): http://www.volkswagen-zubehoer-shop.de/shop/product_info.php?info=p5586_Navigations-DVD-ROM---CY-Europa-Ost----V10-.html

Hi SlobbyK - I can't find any maps with the number 7672, there's a good chart here... http://wiki.ross-tech.com/wiki/index.php/VW_Navigation_System_Maps

Updating is a Plug'n'Play sort of job as they use a tool called ELSA which plugs in and updates from the web without using DVDs so they're right that they don't know what they've got or what you need until they plug it in.

ste2000 is also correct about the new maps and you could have those whatever your firmware or hardware.

Regarding firmware, your 3974 could be updated to 3984 but probably no higher with that hardware and the update would probably require maps to be re-loaded anyway.

My '61 plate Superb is going in next Wednesday to be updated - hopefully both firmware and maps - so I'll report back afterwards.

Finally £50 is not a bad deal so if they do a good job it would be worth it.

Thanks for the info Ste2000 & Chris, that's a bit more reassuring that it s a fairly simple affair. I will update this post with whatever map update I get.

I'm hoping they get the belt work done ok now and the DSG oli change and presumably it's filter?

Not found any comments on Briskoda here anywhere about RRG Skoda just hope they have interested and experienced staff.

Hi,

Map number 7672 is version 8. The mapping database is 2010 Q4.

Version 9 would be 7918 (mapping datadase 2012 Q1). I believe the part number for Skoda v10 maps is 3T0051859Q although a search on skodaparts.com came up blank. So if Skoda dealer is offering a download then it should be the latest but no worse than 7918. I had a dealer download maps that were way out of date version wise because they hadn't updated their system!

I have just updated firmware to 5238. This update didn't require a unit recode or maps to be reloaded. I updated from FW 3974. I'm not sure if this FW is good for revision B units.

Map 8048 contains mapping data from 2013 Q1.

Regards,

Kevin.

Thanks Kevin & Chris, I'm taking her in today so fingers crossed its V10.

The one previous owner must have had the maps and firmware updated. He also modified the DVD player to play video whilst driving.

Thanks again,

Robert.

I paid £ 45 for update in Oct, free at future services , gave me full function post codes which is fine, the mapping is out of date though.

Thanks Mel. I dropped it off this morning. We spoke about the update. They actually did their first one yesterday. He said they had a problem .................................,,. The unit crashed, took them 6 hours to get the thing working again. Eeeek!!!

Plug & Play seems a simplification in this case.

BTW, RRG Skoda is actually the now closed Parkside Skoda of Bolton. They had a relatively good name for a dealer.

So I think it's a little more than fingers crossed in light of yesterday's problems.

Cheers Robert.

Well, just an update on my map update today.

The unit wasn't damaged mainly because they didn't update the maps.......

I think they were too scared. I don't mind really. I'd rather wait until they know what they are doing.

Just hoping that the cambelt/water pump/DSG oil and filter change work was done properly. Time will tell I suppose. Something will probably go whilst towing my c/van in France next year!!

Updating maps (as compared to updating firmware) is (IMHO) quite innocent and safe procedure.

What kind of a dealer is there in your location I wonder. By the way, in my location dealers are not quite cooperative as to map update - had to do it myself (twice since May'13 when upgraded from Bolero).

Thanks Ste, they are a proper main Skoda dealer but are having problems with their gear. I'm glad they didn't attempt mine on the Superb. I picked my Fabia up from them today and they were still having probs with another Columbus update.

I will probably get it done in the spring when it's service time.

Cheers R.

SlobbyK, OK, saying "safe" I meant mode when using DVD for map update, not any dealer's procedure (if any) via wire, wich, as I understand, can be unsafe if hardware is not OK.

In my region road net changes quickly - even V10 maps are already far behind real life situation in some spots, so one simply had to do it himself to properly use car's satnav.
