Shell Helix Ultra Extra vs Helix Ultra AV-L

Featured Replies

Run out of top up oil on my vRS (TFSI), and looking at the two oils above. I see that the Ultra Extra meets the specification of 504/507 but does not have "approved by Volkswagen" whereas the AV-L is listed as approved. I'm currently using AV-L- which does seem very much VW driven and has a much smaller list of specifications in the data sheets below.

Anyone using the Ultra Extra? I can get 5 litres for £39 at my local Eurocarparts: http://www.eurocarparts.com/ecp/p/car-accessories/engine-oils-and-car-fluids/engineoils/5w30-engine-oil/?521772221&0&1&cc5_247

I'm sure either will be fine, but I'm weird and thought I'd make a post about it!

Ultra is always better. It's one more than Mega, which is betterer than Super.

Try TPS, give them your reg and they'll sort you the correct oil cheaper, usually.

ISTR 504/507 is a VAG standard and therefore anything meeting this is recommended by VAG.

Me too, I will be ordering this as this is what is in my top up bottle in the back of the car (even though I have never had to use it). I normally get mine from carparts4less. £28~ ish. Much better than £43 and its what is originally used in my car too.

That's cheap! Hmm, I wonder how much that Castrol works out after trade discount at Halfords- it's priced at £46.99 there so doubt it'll end up cheaper than £27 though!

AV-L was delivered about a day later, very good service from moto-oil.co.uk. Oil arrived as 5 x 1litre bottles which makes it easier for me, as I'll keep one in the back of the car.

Still haven't quite worked out how often and how much I'll need to top up the oil, having owned the car for ~2 months now. Have put in a litre so far and have probably done around 1,600 miles. I've been topping it up to just above the little circle above midway on the dipstick markings as I've read that filling it to the top causes faster oil consumption for whatever reason!

Have you not tried opie oils very good service and good prices
