Put my foot down to overtake, car made a quite puff sort

Put my foot down to overtake, car made a funny puff sort of noise and cut the power followed by a cloud of black smoke. Sounds very loud now as of the exhaust has split, but wouldn't have thought that would explain the loss of power when I put my foot down. Any ideas?

Many thanks

Will

check the pipework, sounds like its one of the bends has blown off check from intercooler back to the egr valve, same happened to me. all power and nothing.

Intercooler pipe popped off? Common on Fabia's.

Had the bonnet up just after posting this turned out is was the plastic intercooler to egr pipe popped off, connected it back on took it for a spin and same happened again, think a new pipe and c clip could be in order. Thanks a lot for the help guys

Check the lugs on the pipe they often wear flat and result in the pipe popping off too.
