Battery flat?

Featured Replies

Hi I have recently inherited my dads fabia 1.2 56 plate, it sat unused for a fortnight and I managed to jump start it and drive about for an hour. Today again it is flat what is the likelihood I need to change the battery or should I try and remove the battery and charge it? If so what's best way to remove it? Although it is 6 year old it has only done 13500 miles. Prior to this it was running fine and started ok probably the damp weather? Does jump starting it damage the car in anyway?

Thanks in advance,

You have 6 year old car that has stood around a lot and done a lot of short journeys, not good for a battery.

Hi.....I only changed mine at the weekend...DEAD CELL..........managed to fit a Bosch S4 for £75....so fingers crossed

It depends on the type of battery. Maintenance free ect, they normally have an indicator on them with a bit of green showing to show the battery's health?

A jump started car will on trickle charge a battery, the battery will not hold charge if the electrolyte level is low. You could check the levels and top up as required and charge up over say a 8 - 12 hour period. See where you go from there. If no luck then replace the battery.

I changed mine last year due to a dead cell also.

The indicator doesn't always show a problem.  When the battery died on our Leon last winter the little window said it was fine, when it was blatantly knackered.

I know what you mean

I was pointing out that a maintenance free battery has a indicator on it. Easy spot to tell the difference between battery types. As you pointed out, they are useless.

Thanks for all the advice will check in daylight tomorrow when hopefully the rain has stopped! Trust it to happen prior to holiday!

I'd start off with a voltage check when running. 13.8 v is normal. Anything less could be battery or alternator. Time to head for a fast fit place to test battery under load.

So thinking of changing battery to be on safe side what are people's recommendation -

Lion 027 -60 ah 480 cca -£45

Exide 50ah 450 cca -£46

Bosch s3. 012 45ah 400 cca £47

Bosch s3 027 56 ah 480cca -£58

Don't want to spend too much as probably won't hold onto car too long

I would get the Lion for £45 if not holding for long
