Front

Guessing by the flange you mean the bit where the wheel bolts bolt into,

Whats wrong with it has the garage knackered it trying to cut the old bearing off it or is the wheel studs stripped or something

Right al tell u the story lol wen I got the car the guy who I got it from said it needed drop links so I believed him as silly as I was lol anyway so I kept hearing like a grinding/rushing noise as if it was my passamger tyre rubbing against the arch so I took it to the local mechanic yesterday I know the guy fairly well and had done loss of work on my prev cars anyway so I asked him to have a look so got it into the ramp n had a look underneath it at thing was drop links there absolutely fine apart from the rubber about to go but there solid no play whatsoever right so kept looking to see war the problem could be until he moved the passamger wheel with his hands and omg the amount of play wat unbelievable seriously huge amount of play he even told me not to drive it away from the garage n gave me his car to take home as I have kids so he said he Defo felt like a wheel bearing n said he will put a new one in etc etc so he phoned me late on tonight and said bad news it's not the wheel bearing that's been causing most of the problem it's been the flange (even tho the wheel bearing was pritty goosed but he said it wasn't to bad but anyway) he said it's the flange that goes on after the bearing if that makes sense.he said that he even tried to fit the new bearing in but it just kept falling out because of this flange thing so he said euro parts do one but he didn't recommend me get it fitted as he bought one before for a Pug and it was rubbish and euro were wanting £45 for one but he said he would have a phone around on Monday for one but I said al ask the guys on the forum what the think so that's the story ano ano am going on and on like a Harry potter book but better telling u it in detail lololol.

So back to flange talk weres best for one? And cheap? And think thts it lol

To replace an octy front wheel bearing is abit of a P.I.T.A as the outer casing of the bearing is in 3 parts,

You have the outer bit that sits into the hub assembly that fits to the car,

Then there is the inner bit that is basically 2 halfs that slot together one from one side of the bearing and other from other side, this is the bit the flange slots into,

To replace the bearing you first remove the whole hub from the car with bearing and flange still in it, then its onto the press and you press the flange out the middle of the bearing, quiet easy but the only problem is that one of the two inner bits of the bearing stays on the flange as you press it out

http://www.noosimmons.plus.com/index_files/WheelBearing/HubRemoved_3.jpg

If you look at the pic the flange where it sits into the bearing is the nice and shiny bit and at the bottom where it meets the flange it splays out, this is the bit of wheel bearing that has come out with bearing and needs to be cut off which is a pain to do as you don't have much space to get a gringer in due to the ABS ring (the thing with the holes in it round the outer edge of the flange)

You then remove the circlip and press the rest of the bearing out the hub clean the area up and press the new bearing into the hub and refit the circlip

Once you have cut the old bit of bearing off the flange it is them pressed back into the bearing but the bearing needs to be supported from underneath as it will push the other inner bit out (the oppersite inner bit that didn't have to be cut off) as the flange should be quiet a tight fit into the bearing.

The flange is only a round bit of metal so i don't really see what could go wrong with it unless somebody has knackered it up

I have both front hubs from an octy vrs Mk1 still - with wheel bearings installed etc.
