Cold start problems

Featured Replies

Hey guys, wondering if anyone could give me any advice?

Sometimes on a cold start on my octavia mk1 vrs, the engine fires up, but then starts shuntering and clunking, then dies.... any suggestions??

I don't want to have to have my foot pushed right down on the throttle while turning her over every morning just to get it started!!

Cheers :)

Sounds like a pipes split somewhere, could be the Fuelpump though.

You should check the coolant sensor first. This tells the ecu if the engine is cold which then adds more fuel.

ahh i do need to replace the thermostat, as that came up on a recent vagcom check... could that be it?

Which one came up ??The stat won't show on a fault code check but the coolant sensor will.

my memory is shocking, but it deffo mentioned the thermostat...

i've read a couple of other threads about how the temp gauge jumps around, and my own temp gauge sometimes reads nothing? then all of a sudden it'll sit around the 70 mark, then occasionally the 90! could it possibly be the thermostat with that problem?

Then it'll drop back down to no reading again!!

Thats the sensor playing up, get a genuine one for about £30 problem solved, Don't bother with a cheapy as they are know to break after days

Is that a coolant sensor you mean aye?

Yep

What does this coolant sensor look like and where is it situated enginewise? . Any tips on locating a new one ? Id give that a try for my erattic tickover / hunting problem .... Or not ?

Thanks for the help guys! I'll give it a go, and i'll let yous know how i get on :)

Just make sure you change it when the engine is cold, you'll lose a dribble of antifreeze, and get the plastic circlip incase you drop yours, they are about 50p.

still haven't fixed the cold start problem....

replaced the coolant sensor, now my temperature gauge showing a consistant temperature, and i had the fault cleared.

engine management light went back on again after a few stop starts, now it's a Lambda sensor coming up (may have been cleared when the diagnostic computer was on)

I still can't figure out why it's not firing up first time though! I've tried disconnecting the MAF aswell, no change.

Any other suggestions??
