VRS Estate Tyres - Bigger ones?

Featured Replies

Hi All,

I Have a TDI VRS estate with 18"s on them. I need new tyres... I have 225/40/18's on them and want more rubber between my rim and the road for protection and noise. Can I go up to 235/40/18's or would 225/45/18's be better?

You can't go to 235 because they would be to wide. You could go up to 45 on the tyre wall but this would effect the rolling circumference which in turn would put more stress on the car and you would come out with lower MPG.

I may be wrong on this and might get corrected but that's how I understand it.

I know it affects speedo readings but im not worried about that. Its not like I am pushing the car to the limit all day every day do you think it would make that much difference stress wise?

I suspect you could get a set of 17" Zeniths with nearly new 225/45/17 tyres on for about 1/2 to 2/3 the price of a set of 225/45/18 tyres and this would leave you with the deeper sidewalls you're after but with the same width and rolling circumference as your existing 225/40/18 tyres.

Replacements when those wear out would be cheaper as 225/25/17 is a fairly standard size
