Retro fit Columbus RNS-510

Featured Replies

Hi everyone, I have just retrofit a used Columbus RNS-510 into my fabia vrs, all working fine as far as I can see apart from the sound. There is no sound from cd playback, radio, nav or when I press options on the screen. Is this an easy problem to fix by re coding or is the unit defective? Like I said, everything is working great apart from the sound.

Assuming it was a secondhand unit it's probably coded for a soundsystem (external amplifier).  Coding to "No Sound System" and "4 Speakers" should fix it.  If I get time over the weekend I'll connect up and post the coding that works fine on mine.

That would be good, thanks for your help.

I've just checked and my coding is: 0C 00 04 00 04 00 00 81 00 00

Hi Phil, I managed to get a different unit and a refund for the previous one. Now id like to link the maxi dot with the columbus, is this something you could help with? I have been told i need to use the vcds to tell the maxi dot there is a sat nav now there.

Is the Columbus a straight fit in a Fabia then?

Is the Columbus a straight fit in a Fabia then?

I think so, mine was a straight swap but there are 2 types apparently. You will have to make sure you have the right one. Prob best to check with someone else on here that knows more about it than i do.

I would be interested too if anyone has any information.

There are 2 types.  The one you don't want is the one that was fitted to the Octavia II as the shape of the front panel is different. You'll also need to fit a GPS antenna if you're not upgrading from an Amundsen and if you get one of the later versions a DAB antenna as well. After that you'll need it coded with VCDS so that everything works properly.

Thanks Phil.

I can't see a lot of stereos would be easily compatible with the maxi-dot display and reversing sensors in my car, hence why I am interested in this.

Is there a quick way to distinguish between Fabia and Octavia II models?

I have VCDS so that shouldn't be a problem.

The Octavia units have more sloping sides so they're noticeably wider at the top than the bottom.

I note that you've got a Fabia 3.  Does this mean it's earlier than 2010?  If so then you'll need a CANBus adaptor at a cost of around £130 to enable everything to communicate properly.  Pre-2010 cars are CAN 1.6 and the Columbus units are all CAN 2.0 and there are a range of issues and missing features that may occur without the adaptor.
