Rear Brake Drum Removal S100

Featured Replies

Lovely weather, long days, perfect for doing all those jobs you've been putting off.

So, to replace the rear brake shoes. Special puller? No worries, there'll be something out there that can shift the drum-cum-hubs methinks. Hmmm, Google shrugs and walks away whistling, Haynes throws it's arms up in despair (see point 3 in pic).

Surely there must be a way round this by now. I mean, years ago, in the Eastern Bloc, did everyone go to their dealer to have the shoes changed?

If anyone (or all of you) knows the way out of this it's be great to hear :-)

On a side note I'll be at the Classic Car Fair at Plough Corner in Little Clacton on Sunday if anyone wants to come and look at the old girl. She's quite rough around the edges but with a new-ish MOT is still going strong. Too strong in places.......

Enjoy the weather folks :-)

You just need a puller with the necessary girth to take in the 130 PCD (which is big by most standards). My local garage lent me one without problem. Also worth noting that on the last trailling arm car I took drums off they virtually fell off with no need for a puller...one did just pul off by hand and the other one took a tap of a hammer.

Hi skunkola, The last time I did this job, I borrowed a one off puller from the local village garage, that they used for early vw beetles & some obscure peugeot or similar. It was made from 3/8" steel, basiclly a square plate 8" x 6" with a hole big enough to pass over the axle nut,& 4 slots to fit the wheel studs, attached by 4 legs of 1" square bar, about 3" long welded to a second plate 5/8" thick x 5" square, with a hole cut centrally about which a large nut was welded, like 11/2",af or similar. a long bolt of corresponding size had the end champhered to fit the hub nut internally, This was bolted to to the wheel studs, once the axle nut was loosened to the end of its thread, the large bolt was then tightened until the hub jumped free. A thick bar was passed through the legs to prevent the hub turning. A skaffold bar  is used as a cheater bar to undo the axle nut as it is tight.147ft lbs,  200nm .Pete

Many many thanks to both Hawkeracing and Covskoda - it's greatly restored hope.

Been looking on eBay and Machine Mart for pullers of that size and they do just fall short as you say Hawkeracing but I'm sure I'll be able to get one.

Covskoda that contraption sounds proper heavy duty (perfect!), almost a medieval torture contraption. I have a VW friend so shall see if these custom/homemade devices are commonplace in VW circles.

Thanks again, I shall report back on my progress for future reference for other forum members.

You should go over to Facebook and join the owners club site....all us rear engine owners are over there daily. Have you tried getting them off without a puller yet.....as I said, sometimes they just about fall off with no need for a puller.

I'm not on Facebook unfortunately, I tried to a while back but found it very confusing so packed it in, may well try again though. Not tried anything since I put it all back together Friday night in preparation for the show tomorrow. Will try again during the week if this nice weather holds.

Here's a link for tomorrow's show, I like the fact that the 'Proper Toilets' are given equal billing as the dance acts :-)

Back from a very productive car show. I'd just parked up and this chap appeared who used to work on old Skoda's many moons ago for a couple of different garages. Says he has the puller I need and a load of other Skoda parts/tools and is happy for them to get back to work (and out of his shed).

I'll report back on what I find :-D

That's not all, see new thread....

Got the special puller today, not tried it out but it looks like it should do it. Photo's below -

Quick look at the puller in position. It took on hell of a lot of effort to free it but when it did it went with a loud PANG!! Drum and shoes looked in great condition, just a little sticky grot on the outer edge of both drum and shoe surfaces. Cleaned off easily with brake and carb aerosol cleaner.
