Superb Keeps cutting out whilst driving.

Featured Replies

My superb keeps cutting out whilst i'm driving. I have a 1.9 tdi pd which has done 180 000miles. 03 plate.

It seems to happen alot when it has been raining and for a few weeks after. then it goes away for a few months.

There is nothing showing on the diagnostics.

This came to a head the another week when my ECU went down. Completely blank the memory. I had this sorted and a new ECU and epprom fitted. Hoping this was the cause of the fault I have been having for a year.

No first rain cloud and she stops again.

I dont want to fry another ECU so any help it would be brillant.

Try the second post at the top of this page, "water ingress"

I did wonder if the OP's ECU is swimming in the plenum chamber...  Though if there were that much water you'd also imagine the car to be practically a submarine, not just the usual boat...! :).   I guess it might have had the front all sealed up for the pollen filter etc, but the bungs left in...

lol sounds like you have fish under the carpet...

I will check again but the last time I had the carpet up it was dry with no evidence of water under the passenger seat. The ecu that went was the one in the engine compartment in front of the driver next to the battery. This did have a tide mark on the metal but was dry in and around the bulk head and under the battery also inside ecu box when it went down.

My guess is that you have a faulty ECU power relay in the plenum chamber. This would explain everything.

Thanks will change that.

I would agree - check the double pole relay first. If you open it up, there will be cracked (fatigued) solder joints where the relay frame and other terminals are soldered to the pc board. Stupid design - stress relief for these joints is easy to design. Resolder using solder with at least 40% lead.

The other possibility is an intermittent injector wiring loom in the head. Normally they just cause a misfire, but I've seen some old looms in very poor shape. New looms are cheap and easy to fit - warm it before fitting.

If your ECU really was damaged (very rare) it could be that an intermittent loom, coupled with the inductance of the injector solenoids damaged the output stages through over voltage. Better to avoid a repeat run...

rotodiesel.

I forgot to mention, sometimes it does not cut out but just blips with a short power drop. The glow plug light flashes and then it carrys on.

Thank you I will have a look at the loom.

If I could get relays and loom done for £150, I would be happy.
