Horns not working.

Featured Replies

I've just noticed that neither of the horns are working on our 2006 fsi octy estate. When the centre of the steering wheel is pressed you hear a solenoid clicking behind the panel to the right and below the steering wheel but no sound from either horn. Anybody got any thoughts? Thanks.

Have you checked the fuses?

also probably a relay rather than a solenoid :)

Many thanks for your reply, of course you are right it is a relay that I can hear clicking not a solenoid, a bit of brain fade on my part. Yes I have checked the fuse, in fact if I pull it and press the centre of the wheel the clicking at the relay stops. I have got under the car and removed the engine under tray to get to the horns to check if there is a supply when the wheel is pressed, but due to failing dexterity and eye sight I was unable to remove either plug. I think that both of them might have failed through lack of use. When I have a bit more time I'll have another go at removing one and connecting a 12 volt supply to see if that makes it work. Thanks again.

VW connectors normally have a locking tab which you will need to release before you can disconnect, this is probably your issue.

certainly sounds like loom/ or horn fault.. if you have a local VCDS user it might show a fault to assist with the troubleshooting.

Thanks for that, I even unbolted the horn and had it hanging on the loom to see if it helped with releasing the plug but there is no slack in the loom to make it more accessible. Bloody cars!!

Take 'em out and wire them straight to the battery to test them.  If they work OK then it's a wiring fault (faulty supply or faulty earth). If not, it's time for new horns.

Thanks for advice, took horns out connected a 12volt supply. Nothing, fiddled with small bolt adjuster under plastic blank on top of horns and have got them working again. Moral of this, use your horns occasionally as I think my problem was lack of use.
