Turbo gone. IHI or K04?

Featured Replies

Went out this morning and struggled to accelerate to 30. Had a squeal front he engine bay at just under 2000rpm. Managed to limp to my local mechanic who had a quick look. Initially thought it could just be a loose boost hose, but it appears the sound is coming directly from the turbo itself.

So, assuming it needs replacing, what are the cost differences between a replacement IHI and a K04. I already have an intake, full turbo back and upgraded clutch. I assume I would need an intercooler and fuel pump (or is the upgraded one in the TSI ok?).

I expect the cost difference would be too much so will probably just go for a replacement IHI, but worth a look. Also, is an LSD a must with a K04 and fwd?

Right mate, if you have a tsi lump, then the conversion to k04 is best done with a 'kit' from the likes of revo or apr with the ascociated map..

The fuel system on the tsi will cope no problem. Intercooler would be a good investment but it will still run and run well with oe.

There will be no more justifiable time to do the swap than a ruined oe, so if it was ever or will ever be your intention to achieve more power now is the time.

Check out apr and revo sites for the rundown on hardware and cost

It depends on what you deem acceptable grip levels without LSD. If you have a progressive map, linear throttle, and decent ability with the loud pedal, there's no reason to not be able to manage without.

Ideal, thanks. I guess it just depends on the cost difference then. I suspect it will be quite substantial though.

Are you with Shark and how many miles does your car have on it?

If you can afford a K04 get it, they're so much fun but hard to get the power down in the wet. Would you need new injectors on a TSI? My K04 map is quite aggressive and feels skitty in forth in the dry with Eagle F1's, I'd say if you can afford an LSD get one.

Currently stage 2 Revo. The issue is that I might be moving soon, so certainly can't factor in the cost of an LSD yet. Anyone any ideas on how much a replacement IHI may cost?

There's one on ebay with 18k on it for £260 inc del

Cool, thanks. Must have missed that one when I looked.

hi nick

sorry to hear about your turbo issues. i know its a trek for you but you might try alex @aks to see if he has anything suitable, either a k04 or ihi. i know he's building a new engine for his own vrs so his hybrid k04 might be available.?

for me the decision would be based around whether you're going to keep the car long term or not.  if you're keeping it, then k04 makes sense.. if its going to be sold at some point soon then i'd go ihi so you could get the car back to stock easily for the sale.

btw - ref your high speed vibration issue, i didn't get to the bottom of why mine was doing it, but a change back to stock, dampers, wishbones, bushes, ball joints and geometry and its gone.  i do still have a slightly noisy front end so i think maybe a wheel bearing is on the way out - doesnt vibrate but you can hear it.

Thanks for that mate. I certainly have no intentions of selling the car, still love it. Unfortunately, from the research I've done, I think the switch to K04 would be to expensive. I could be wrong but that's how it's looking at the moment.

I'm also questioning the ability of the vRS to put down that much power. Mine will spin it's wheels in 3rd at 70 when wet!

Regarding the vibrations, I'm really hoping it was the rear spacers, one of them, when put on a flat surface, appeared to be slightly out of shape, maybe 1/2 a mm or so. Not sure if that would do it?

Get a diff if you can afford it. It TRANSFORMS the car.

What diff are you running Harry ? I still can't decide, Peloquin, Quaife or Wavetrac ?

+1 for a diff and k04 ! Busy saving for my diff to go in with k04 conversion and WMI kit !

I'm running the Quaife. The Wavetrac I believe is slightly better, but more expensive.

Whilst the weather is dry I'll try and shoot some footage with my GoPro to show you the level of traction it's got.

Sound,it would be good for us all to see, well all of us thinking about it anyway, may also make a few people want one. I just couldn't afford one and the clutch and flywheel in one go !

Just a quick update. My DV was split, so thats been replaced and the screeching noise appears to be coming from the fuel system. There are several faults showing a malfunction with the fuel pressure sensor. Fingers crossed thats it as it will be way cheaper.

Is it just a straight swap to the k04?

You need to upgrade the injectors, put on a  better FMIC (I have the S3 one), re-route the DV to the front, and software upgrade.

You'll also want an upgraded HPFP.

Apparently they've discovered the stock injectors can actually flow enough fuel to produce the same power as the S3 injectors (on the Tfsi), You'd just have to find a tuner who would map for them.

Can't beat a diff. Loved having the peloquin on my vrs. :)
