Get Out Of Jail - for a fee

Silly press girl in the media scrum asked Bernie Ecclestone, as he was going into court for today's judgement, "Any Comments ?" - Bernie replied "Bye-bye". LMFAO.

Germany have a slightly different legal system to us.

Certain crimes, typically fraud and some non-capital offences, that would be excessively expensive to bring to Court, can be "cleared" where both sides agree that the defendant can pay a "charge", often more than might actually be fined, to clear the case. This is exactly what Uncle Bernie has done.

If you look at some of the Fraud cases that have taken place in the UK, even when a guilty has been entered, and the costs involved it can look quite a good idea.

I wish i had that sort of money just to pay out like that.

Small change to Bernie.

And the funniest thing about it is he's paid his way out of prison for bribery charges.

But in this case the buy out was not a bribe and is perfectly legal in Germany where the trial was being conducted.

A bloody farce ! Just shouldn't be allowed IMO , how can someone make and illegal payment (bribery)and them just pay another bung to get away with it ?

The German court offered him the payment option as the Prosecutor considered, in the light of how the case was progressing, the likelihood of a successful prosecution was minimal.

Ecclestone chose to pay the €100 as a way of guaranteeing no prosecution.

Seems logical if not "just".

Why?

They were never going to get that money from him in fines and they would have had to put him in prison at their expense.

That plus they themselves said it was going to be difficult to make anything stick.

Logical, as above.

The person that is supposed to have received the Bribes & Payments went to jail.

The person who paid out that money and maybe deprived other of theirs, now pays more money to save a trial for something he says he is not guilty of,

& carries on as before,

in the business that the supposed bribes were being paid to ensure he kept controlling.

It seem pretty straight forward.    'Just get on with Business, & money making and making money by taking others',

It is the Germany, British and every other countries way.

Getting the person that ended up in jail by paying more of Bernie's Wealth or other peoples money would be the right thing to do surely,

him being a fair and honest man.

Yes, if you consider it a 100mill fine, but without the public expense of a trial or prison, then it makes a lot of sense.

If some thing like Court Cases costs Public money, then someone receives the money, what goes around comes around.

In Bribery and Bank & Investment Fraud, the money is in the Black Economy and disapears from the Tax Men and Treasury and into the Super Yachts and the likes

of the Billionaires,

It is still out there, spent on the Luxury lifestyle and it takes a long time to have be back in the Public Funding and Economy.

So like making money out of taking other peoples, Business & Investment Fraud and Bribery is theft.

Cut their hands off,

or at least Take their Wealth and strike them off from Directorships.

Because that is how the German legal system works.

Enough people have already explained that on here.

That's ok then ! Sarcasm the lowest for of whit ?

I don't see what people are getting on their high horses about.

If he had been taken to court, found guilty and FINED £60m would that have been any different?

I think the issue is that some people think that he has bought his way out of a stint in prison.

I don't know enough about the case or German law, but if he was never likely to be sentenced then the outcome seems sensible to me.

If however he has infact been offered a 'get out of jail free card' at a price very few others could afford I can understand why some may see this as a little unfair.

I don't know enough about the case but If he was unlikely to be sentenced and fined then why didn't he take his chances and see the trial through to the end? Would have cost he even less then or maybe the chance of him going to prison was too high so he paid it off?

Call me cynical but maybe this outcome was another reason why the case was heard in Germany

Where else would the case be heard, ?

the Bribes received by the person convicted & in jail were due to German laws being broken.

Obviously for someone to be bribed, there must be someone or more than one bribing them.

But then plebs down the pyramid take the fall all the time in a the Business world.
