Replace Airbag cover - Would you?

Featured Replies

Since buying my a car a few weeks ago the scratches on the steering wheel badge are really bugging me. I thought the only answer was to replace the whole airbag which wouldn't make financial sense but I've since found out that the cover is available as a spare part and at approx £40 it's not too bad.

The problem is it involves taking the airbag out of one cover and fixing into the new one, there are quite a few layers to take off but it does look pretty simple. I'm nervous about doing it myself but am I worrying over nothing?

The process is shown here -

Removing the airbag is a 2 minute job, just release two clips and out it comes. Obviously you need to disconnect the battery and leave the car for 30+ mins beforehand.

I'm ok with taking the airbag off the wheel, it's taking the thing apart and refitting in a new cover that I'm not sure about..

Doesn't look too bad in those instructions.

There's been a couple of people on here that have put a FL cover in a pre-FL airbag. Or a FL cover (with silver trim) in place of one without.

Might be worth looking those up before you go ahead.

Cheers guys, have PM'd a guy who did it on here, see if he has any tips. I'm sure it's as easy as it looks :-)

done a few on vw, same design

fairly easy, just take a picture before you start so you know how it goes back

and make sure you check the horn plate works properly

Can I just confirm is it okay to take a pre fl airbag and put it inside a fl cover. Ie would it fit as I am changing my wheel as this would save a few pennies!

Well I've got the part but haven't fitted it yet, does anybody know someone who would do it for me? Would rather leave it someone with experience of handling airbags..

I would do it, but I'm miles away

Was having a look at this today, I unclipped the airbag but couldn't see how to get the yellow connector off, anyone know?

The yellow connector is plugged into the centre of the steering wheel not the back of the airbag. I've since done some research and found out how it unclips so will have another look at the weekend.

Thanks for the advice but I've got a good how-to guide and have got a few tips from others who have done it.

I need to do this at some point.
