Turbo Replacement

Featured Replies

So my recently purchased 06 Jetta (2.0 PD TDi), needs a turbo replacement as it's over boosting.

I've been looking around at my options but as i'm new to diesels and VAG cars i'm unsure of the best route to take.

When i bought the car i'd intended to take it to shark or similar for a remap to increase the power and torque, I've moved from a modified clio 182 so knew i'd miss the power.

However now i need to replace the turbo i'm trying to weigh up my other options.

First option, I can get a reconditioned turbo fitted for around £600, this comes with a 1 year warrenty from the fitter (local VAG specialist), they also do remaps for around £175 which include EGR delete (so i'd probably get this done too if it was worth the extra cost). The only thing putting me off this slightly is the stories i've read on forums recently about people paying for a reconditioned turbo and it only lasting a few months, also it's still the standard turbo being the weak point of the engine, obviously it comes with a 12 month warranty, but i'd rather not have the hassel to be honest.

Second option, Hybrid turbo fitted and supplied by someone like The Derv Doctor (also localish), I've not contacted yet to get a quote, But this would give me 200-220bhp for not a lot more money i assume. However i've read a lot of post stating that a number of additions mods are required to support this type of turbo. No mention of warrenty, but turbo is supplied by Turbo Dynamics, so assume the warrenty for the turbo would be from them, through the Derv Dr. I assume a Hybrid turbo would be stronger than the original unti?

Third option and most expensive, the budget Darkside kit fully fitted and mapped with the GTB1756V turbo and supporting mods. at £1750. I know i'd probably be happiest with this, but the cost is the only offset issue.

I'm not expecting anyone to tell me which is my best option, I also know i'll need to weigh up clutch/flywheel upgrades with the hybrid and darkside kit, and also that the remapped standard turbo might even push the clutch over the edge. Plus brake/suspension upgrades with bigger power need to be considered and factored for.

I guess i'm just hoping someone can voice there own experiences on any of the options or better yet muiltiple options or what they'd wished they'd done instead.

Money will probably puch me towards the recon turbo and map. But I'd rather have something more reliable, the bigger power just being an added benefit (or not).

Sorry for the long post, thanks for any input.

i had a recon turbo at 90k now at just under 140k and it's showing the signs of wearing out as it were. i regret at the time not getting a hybrid purely for the stronger internals but as you said i believe there are supporting mods, i am running a stage 1 remap but 50k doesn't seem like that great a life expectancy for the just under 1k i paid for it all. Go for the best you can afford and i had the "new" turbo fitted before i even dreamt of modding the car so from the modding perspective i regret the standard turbo too.

sorry for not providing any alternatives, these are just my reflections on the choice i made at the time.

Thanks for the reply.

I've spoken with Darkside today, unfortunitely its going to be end of november before they can fit me in.

I'm kind of going around in circles at the minute between waiting for the Darkside kit, which is £1750 + a clutch at some point in the near future and brake upgrades, so i'm guessing £3k at least for this set up. Or just going for the Standard turbo with remap for a little under £800 (hopefully a new clutch wouldn't be required for this).

I've almost ruled out the hybrid, because the more i read about them the more it puts me off due to reliablity issues, also cost would seem to be more than i originally though, and closer to the Darkside setup, would seem silly not paying the extra for a much stronger turbo setup in the gtb1756v

Hybrids are meant to be stronger it just depends where they come from, as it depends what quality internals are used. Turbo dynamics have a good reputation but you tend to pay for it depends if they have a sale on. Then theres aet turbos near xscape they are well priced and pretty honest. You could always buy the kit from darkside and have it fitted at another garage but then you have mapping issues.

On the other hand are you sure the turbo is gone overboosting can be caused by a few things, look up sticky vanes also n75 controller, possibly if the car is already mapped before you bought it.
