Do my brake pads really need replacing?

I had my Fabia serviced by an independent last month and he reckoned the brake pads would needs replacing in the next 1000 miles.

Having started it today the pads are 6mm thick and as I understand it the minimum thickness is 2mm. Is it worth me doing it while I have the caliper off or should I save it for a while?

Also the discs have a small lip on the outer edge, about 0 5mm if that. Are they dead?

I'd love to get this sorted today so if anyone has anya answers that'd be much appreciated!

Almost certainly not. Standard servicing ploy to generate extra work.

I will have to dig out my old invoices that show 'brake pads/discs pitted/worn' on the service invoice every single year for 6 years for the Passat which I never changed them on over the time I had it.

I'm not quite sure why he mentioned it as he knows that I do all this sort of work myself. I trust the garage that serviced it so thought I would crack on. Oh well, got my afternoon back now! Thanks for your help.

A bit like when the TT when into Audi for it’s service, they told SWMBO that the brakes were “75% worn”, I queried it to be told ‘“... sorry we meant there was 75% left” !!
