what dose a egr delete do?

Featured Replies

Iv been hereing alot of talk about egr delete I was just woundering wot exactly are the gains of doing this are????

It means Exhaust Gas Recirculator. What it does is take off approx. 10% of the exhaust gases and feed them back into the inlet manifold so the soot and gases are re burnt into a less noxious exhaust gas.   It was to help reduce soot and noxious gases to comply with Euro4  emissions.  I was speaking to AMD tuning sometime ago and they advised against deleting this system and their reason was, the re circulation of the exhaust which also contains a smidge of oil, also helped in lubrication of the cylinder walls/rings and pistons. Maybe this is reason why the PD engines last so well.

The main problem with this system is the inlet manifold and the egr pipe would clog up regularly with soot and oil but is easy to clean up periodically but not so the manifold as this is a bigger job to remove.

To delete this function a small blanking plate can be fitted to the egr valve to block of any re circulation and it would also mean an adjustment to the ecu to stop warning lamps coming on.

I had the delete done as part of a remap at Shark, so no idea if there is any improvement to the driving just from a delete alone.

I can't see how an uncalibrated amount of oil can improve anything performance wise.  Gumming up manifolds is just the start, rings and combustion chambers would be next.  Abrasive forms of dirty carbon providing lubrication for cylinder walls?  What? What??

A person claiming any sort of automotive engineering knowledge saying that ^^^ would be at the bottom of the pile as far as supplying anything to do with my car.
