Does anyone know for sure if the grill centre from a pre-facelift is the same as in the facelift? A couple of sellers on ebay reckon they are, but I don't fully trust them.

Nope... They are a bit different. Give attention to the edges of both. Prefacelift is more Felicia like, and the facelift model is more Fabia like. I planned to do a "facelift" to my 2000 SLX so I checked these stuff. Here is a comparision:

Yep, that's the grille surround, but is the grille centre (the black finned part) the same?

Would the issue also be where the slits are on the centre that allow the surround to clip onto? I don't know, it's just a thought.

I don`t think it would fit because on facelift model the bottom of the grill is pushed forward to make it more sharp. Try comparing side view (not from front) of both versions.

Yeah coz there is catches all round that clip onto a stepped section that need pushing out with a flathead. I think there's 3 just round the badge and about 2 along the longest sides and 1 at each corner. Just thinking it may further complicate an attempt to make fit.
