Clutch pedal feels rough

Featured Replies

I've searched through other forum posts & can't find anything similar to this. Sorry if it has been posted before. We have a 52 reg 1.9 tdi 130 bhp Superb. It's done 130180 miles. Tows a caravan about 5-6 times a year, including up to Scotland & back once a year. Over the past few weeks the clutch pedal feels rough when it's depressed to change gear. The clutch isn't slipping. Sometimes it's almost like metal on metal if that makes sense? We are thinking that the clutch & dual mass flywheel are due for a change. Know this is an expensive job! Given that we've owned the car for aprox the last 10 years & neither have been changed. Was just wondering if there could be another explanation to it? I know the car is old & in an ideal world we should be looking at replacing it. Unfortunately funds won't stretch that far at the moment. Have got a bit stashed to one side to cover this job.  It hasn't given us too much trouble compared with other cars we've owned.

Other than a defective clutch pressure plate or release bearing, one B5.5 speciality is that the clutch release arm in the bellhousing wears through at the ball stud at the bottom where it pivots. When renewing a clutch on these cars, it's well worth a check and renewing the clutch arm and ball stud (it just knocks out) as necessary.

A well maintained 1.9PD Superb will do twice your mileage without difficulty.

Ok thanks for your reply rotodiesel. We will have a look at that too. Other then feeling gritty, the clutch seems fine.
