Purchasing a VRs - Help!

Featured Replies

Hi, I'm really sorry if there are multiple posts about this! I have had a brief look, but I must admit I'm rubbish at looking for stuff.

My VW Polo got written off recently - someone drove into it whilst it was parked on the side of the road... I'm looking for something a lot bigger, and a local garage has three different Skoda Octavia VRs. They do appeal to me, because I definitely fancy something a little faster! I was just wondering if anyone could share any views on what I should look for, and whether there are any inherent risks on getting the 2.0T FSI over the 2.0TDI or anything like that.

One car is a 2011 TDI with 53k miles ( http://www.carscene-norwich.co.uk/used-cars/skoda-octavia-2-0-tdi-cr-vrs-5dr-norwich-201410067988006 )

whilst the other two are older FSI cars, one a 2007 hatchback with 72k on the clock ( http://www.carscene-norwich.co.uk/used-cars/skoda-octavia-2-0-tfsi-vrs-5dr-norwich-201409307816695 ), and the other a 2006 estate with 71k http://www.carscene-norwich.co.uk/used-cars/skoda-octavia-2-0-tfsi-vrs-5dr-norwich-201502110875393 ).

I take it  i should be checking out whether they have had timing chains done etc at that age?

Any help would be massively appreciated!

Hi, what sort of mileage p/a are you doing? Lower miles = probably the Tfsi.

IIRC there was an issue with a cam follower wearing on the Tfsi, sure someone will correct if I am wrong. Sorry no idea on cam belt lifespan - might be an idea to get it done (for your peace of mind) as part of purchase.

Huge difference in price, and age between the Derv vs Petrol cars you've linked - could buy a lot of fuel for £3/4K.

My last few cars before the Skoda were Tdi's (GM and Nissan) had nothing but trouble! The Tsi has been almost faultless in the 4+ years and 50K I've owned it - inlet manifold needed replacing last month.

The 06 and 07 will be tfsi petrols and are £285 a year to tax the diesel will be £205 for a year

the petrols will need super unleaded as they are tfsi and that is the same price where i live as normal diesel you will get about 330 miles from a tank of petrol and about 500 miles from the diesel

petrols average around 30-35 mpg

diesels average around 45-52 mpg

the newer tsi vrs petrol however is much more efficent and has a lower tax band and runs on normal unleaded these can be found around the 2009 reg mark with the face lift front end

i would test drive a diesel and test drive a petrol and see how they compare to your driving style and what you use it for

i had an 06 petrol vrs it lasted 3 months and i got rid the running costs were very high .
