Adding rear disc brake without having calipers holders

Featured Replies

Hi,

I came from Romania and I own a mk2 Fabia from end of 2009, without facelift. The engine is 1.2 HTP with only 60hp. I like this car a lot, because was a gift from my dead grandpa :(. I like the look of a rally car and with time I did some improvements, to look and handle better.

First, some white LED for interior, didn't like greens.

Then, a little upgrade for suspension. I put some Eibach springs for Polo GTI and the upper plates also from Polo GTI to lower another 1cm.

Inspired from others, I found on internet some pics with a Fabia having a racing flag on rear sides, so I gave a try :)

I remove the front sign and make a custom design, the front grille was covered with fiber glass and then painted.

and some proper wheels :)

The most ambitious part yet, was adding rear disc on a welded axle that did not have holders for calipers. Take some 7075 alloy and design holders and buy everything needed for this project.

I am using Golf IV 4motion rear calipers, of course, fully rebuild.

Here is an album with some pics during the installation, the rear is wider with 1.2mm each side and I will make some spacers for front soon. http://imgur.com/a/RseIy

Hope you like and said something about this.

Thanks,

Radu

I did't like the idea with external link, but I was in a hurry :(

Before everything starts, I found a damaged welded axle from a 2006 Polo. It was using drum set up, but have the holders for calipers. So, take some quick measurements and try to improve the part by making a little beefy.

After this, looking for some second hand calipers, but in good shape. I found a pair from Golf IV TDI 4motion, because the owner upgrade to vented disc. Blasted everything and the caliper post were painted black because they tend to get rusty.

Some custom hoses and copper pipes. The total length was approximate by the old pipes.

After having all parts I need, including 8 high steel class longer screws to fit the hub, begin to remove the drum system.

First hand brake cable

then the hole drum with a 16mm socket

After this I have to remove all the rust in order to have a full contact of my custom caliper holder.

For this step I also use a Proxxon cutting disc and then again the steel wire brush.

Then a quick test for the caliper holder

Install the new pipe and secure with clamps

Next cut a little from those plates, were suitable for golf IV not for Fabia, my mistake when order them

A little work was at ABS sensor, I had to cut a little from the plug in one side. But I did not take photos :(

Then install the bearing and disc :)

Same on the other side and finally bleeding process.

And a nice fit on 7J ET35 rims

Next will be 312 front brakes, I will keep 16" alloys, does this prevent clearance for 312mm disc?

Thanks

no 312's fit over 16's no problem

So I have to go with 17"?

No 16's are fine with 312's I run them on mine no problem

Find a pair of front calipers for 20£ and in about a week I'll two carriers for 15£ each and two hubs.

For calipers I will make custom Aluminium 54mm pistons and change all o-rings

From what I read, the hubs for Golf IV are a direct fit for my Fabia?

Thanks
