The rear door will not respond to the key fob. I have sprayed the usual bits with WD40 but no luck.

 

Also the passengers cannot open the door from the inside using the chrome door opening handle. It feels limp and spongey. I thought I had not re-hooked the cable when I put the panel back on but this is not the case..

 

I looked at the other end of the cable but it is not broken or loose but I cannot see all of the mechanism as it's behind a metal panel making up the door..

 

Any suggestions please about the electric and the cable.  I think I can still unlock the door if i carefully prise up the door button

For rear door check the wiring through the door pillar for any fatigue or breaks. When you can open it get the door card off and check the multiplug on the window motor. I have the feeling a new mech would sort it but check the basics/free things first.

Passenger door the other end of the cable hooks onto a plate roughly in line with the locking barrel, try and lube there and check for movement, sounds like either the catch on the mech isn't releasing fully resulting in slack at the interior handle end, or as you say the cable isn't staying snug at the interior handle. Does sound like a cabling issue, but could be a sticky arm on the mech. Hope that helps.

Thanks for the tip Freedom. It was a cabling problem. I'd hooked the cable in place but not locked it in fully. Difficult when you are working sort of upside down and the panel is in your line of sight. 

 

Thankfully that's fixed but the intermittent open and close response to the fob  isn't. sometimes it open  ok but closing is a bit iffy. Keep having to check and pushing the lock button down.

 

I have taken the wiring loom out that goes through the door pillar, as suggested, out and it looks fine. No cracks or breaks. Might spray the lock and cables again but I cannot think where to go next.  Could it be the micro switch in the lock? But then why would it work sometimes and not at other times.

Glad you found something, that plastic outer nipple has to be in just right, and yes you need 7 pairs of hands.

The microswitch is more to do with the system knowing if the door is open or not I think, so it can operate interior light, lights on buzzer, door puddle light etc. If you have issues with any of the stuff that should happen when you open the door then yes, microswitch.

You'll be amazed how much a good lube of the mech can fix. Best to get do card off and get in behind the door inner panel to get at all the catches properly. Wd40 is all good, I did that and some spray grease to help it last, my front passenger door occasionally refused to drop the pin on locking. Lubed it last October and still fine now after the winter and such. Sticky mechs are more prone to mess with locking than unlocking for some reason, try it. If lubrication doesn't work it nods towards multiplug. I did a post in the tech section on checking and protecting multiplugs. Also while card is off inspect the loom further, there's a couple of places it can rub on stuff like the window regulator. Hope that helps.
