Posting on behalf of my dad, whilst driving home from work along the city ring road the car began to feel like it was misfiring a little bit then about 50yds down the road it completely cut out and wouldn't restart,

He had to call the rac to try and start it using easy start spray, but now he's home it won't start again.

Faults read at the road side was pre injection fault but was told it could possibly be egr valve?

It's a 2.5l on an 05 plate

When I had similar symptoms unfortunately it was the dreaded VP44 pump failure... fault code was 17583, read more info here: http://wiki.ross-tech.com/wiki/index.php/17583/P1175/004469

In my case, I had to rebuild the hydraulics of the pump, which was a hefty bill...I hope I am wrong in your case, but further investigation needs to be done by a mechanic, as some errors do not pinpoint the issue, giving potential causes...
