Sat Nav SD Card...

Featured Replies

Picked up my Octavia last night, and apparently because when the card was ordered, it was still MY15, and the line order for the SD Card doesnt get amended, so they have had to order up a new one.

Now this is where it gets interesting. I've been told that the card does not require to be set up for use in my Amundsen, but I was under the impression that the card cant be taken from one car to another ? If this is the case, does anyone know how the card ties itself to the unit, is something written to it on first use ?

I'm considering take a raw image of the card before and after it's been in the car, I have a forensic tool for analysing various things, so could tell if anything has been written to the card.

Before anyone says it, I am NOT condoning piracy in any way, nor distributing the image of the SD card, etc, it's just out of curiousity to see the situation...

Anyone got any thoughts on it ?

I am intrigued by the fact that you cannot simply copy an updated nav database to a blank SD Card - you appear to have to delete the contents of the card that came with the car and copy the new database onto it. How is the SD card protected so that you cannot just use any SD Card? The one supplied with the car doesn't seem to be any different to a blank SD Card so I assume that there is some hidden identifier on the card which is not exposed through your computer's file system - is this correct?
