I got it! Had scuttle tray off, no standing water all internal electrics seem to be working!

No standing water doesn't mean anything really - you need to see if you can take the pollen filter housing out easily (carefully remove rain deflector from windscreen, 3 bolts then lifts out). If you can, and the seal to the body is a piece of foam, you will still get water in regardless of bungs in or out. If the housing is stuck solid, or it comes out easily but the seal looks like thick licorice, then you should be OK.

Thanks! So if it's foam I need to swap it out for the liquorice-esque one?

 

Should that and running a dehumidifier in the car sort any potential issue out?

Yes, you should swap it for the licorice.  VW still supply the old foam seal with replacement pollen filter trays (which is bordering on criminal).  Sealant is an option, but is a pain if you ever want to get the housing out, is messy, stinks for a while, and is prone to error as the space you need to fill with sealant is quite large.

 

If you have the foam seal you will be able to see what the problem is - the metal lip cuts into the treated surface of the open cell foam.  Once this surface is cut, any water uses the foam as a wick and transfers from the outside of the seal to the inside (and then down into the car).

 

Removing the bungs removes one of the major sources of water around the pollen tray - the huge body of water in the bulkhead sloshing around corners.  But it doesn't help with runoff from the windscreen which can pool around the back / side of the pollen filter housing (that little nook is a dirt magnet, with leaves seeming to form perfect little dams around there!)

 

Unless the car is wet, can't see the point in using the dehumidifier.  If the car steams up quickly in this weather with the AC off, then you might have water under the carpet.  Checking under the carpet a little isn't too hard - you can take up the side along the passenger front footwell fairly easily and get your hand under, or you can slide your hand under the vents in the rear footwell (carefully, they are razor sharp plastic). ( I have small hands, my definition of easy might be different to yours )

Good news. All sealed and garage said very little water in there anyway. No corrosion. Dehumidifier time it is!
