Cornwall - Yeti Country

Featured Replies

Just been down near Bodmin for a few days which included a Douglas motorcycle dinner. I don't own one (have Triumphs) but I have a few friends who do and I have been going down to Cornwall, from Warwickshire, for years.

There were about 35 at the dinner, including wives, and in the car-park there were three Yetis, including mine (Douglas enthusiasts do tend to sit at the higher end of the age range!) so that is a pretty good percentage of guests to Yeti owners there!

And next day another one appeared!

Had intended to go in my wife's Mini but as per another thread that was poorly, so took the opportunity to give the Yeti it's first good run. And very well it performed too. Cruised nicely at 75ish on the motorway and was ideal on the narrow, winding Cornish lanes.

It did throw up the short comings of the 5 speed box though. On some hills the gaps between ratios are a little too great, unless you are willing to rev it some, which I don't like to do, especially when cold.

For those with diesels in Cornwall, I doubt you will have many DPF or EGR issues as you can't help but give them a good work out!

A good trip and really enjoyed the Yeti, well I always do!

Agree about the Cornish work-out - almost as good as the legendary Italian tune-up.  There are some lovely hairpin climbs, just right for the DSG in S.  I've never tried the 110 but I can imagine a 5-box feeling a bit empty nowadays; no problem on the M5, though, I'm sure!

Co-incidently, Graham, it was on our first escape to Cornwall (rather more than five decades ago...) that we first drove down the old track to Trevellas Porth.  Not been there for some time but you've prompted another look this year!  Info on those GLs might be interesting, too, if you would?

I'll look them out and PM you, but it will be a few days.

I had to take a run at that :peek: (and I don't remember it as black-topped!) in our Ford 100E 3-speed van.  Those were the days.  (No, they weren't :x .)  I can't remember what we had last time.

Blue Hills was a club Hill Climb or some such, even way back then.

Interesting bit of countryside that. Will definitely have to go and explore on the bike. Not too far from where my friends live near Liskeard.

Is the route up the tarmac road or up the stony trail? Road I guess and the trail a footpath?

The Trials route is up the footpath. They normally start not far from the gate, have a "stop astride and restart" half way up, with the finish of the test at the top. There are some good videos on YouTube showing it.

It is one of those Rights of Ways anomalies, in that the landowner can authorise use of it by vehicles, and is the reason the Motor Club bought it. The gate is locked!!

(Not sure it is the BTRDA, might be the VVSCC or someone similar)

Beware if you go north from the Mine; there is a VERY narrow section of road going up the hill, out of the valley, between a house and the cliff wall. You'll see it if you follow StreetView that way.

Bodmin? You were still up country!

My favorite run down here is back roads between Hayle and Camborne, going past the Hayle Towans. Lovely views, lovely corners and just a fun road.

But then I don't get to do much "fun" driving these days as the wife won't let me loose with the kids in the car...

Even without the locked gate I wouldn't be driving up there! Would be relatively easy on the trail bike though.

I'll have a look via YouTube out of interest.

:D  I've been all over Cornwall but tend to visit that area more because as I say have got friends near Liskeard.

What I don't enjoy so much is the "short cuts" that my mate insists on taking. Fine in his Mini Moke and MGB, being quite narrow, but when I take the TT it can be a nightmare! Yeti isn't too bad though. Best is on the motorbikes or scooters unless you come across some gravel.

Since semi-retiring the plan was to go down more often but just can't seem to find the time!

Having looked at some vids I definitely wouldn't do it in a car! Interesting that the old cars make it with less effort than the more modern ones, narrow tyres and lightweight obviously help there.

I'd give it a go on this though.

If you really want to give it a "go" whilst down in Cornwall, try this road from Blue Hills Mine into St Agnes!!

https://www.google.co.uk/maps/place/Blue+Hills+Tin/@50.3207617,-5.193205,16z/data=!4m2!3m1!1s0x486b1bde74822fed:0xb0317ffd76104b02?hl=en

And there are a couple of Yeti friendly green lanes nearby, as well

Is this what you have in mind for Blue Hills?

Had a look at that one. Not too bad on a bike, though it would be easier if they didn't have to stop just before the tricky bit!

They are quite good, aren't they.

Daughter used to live in Hayle but now lives in St Ives, so we get down occasionally. She's the Asst Manager at the Coffee Lounge in St Ives.

It isn't meant to be easy!!

And don't forget they have probably been on the go continuously for at least 18 hours before they get here!
