1.8 tsi what is this connector?

Featured Replies

Hello fellow octavia owners! I was hoping one of you could help me identify a connector thats causing me problems. Its throwing up a p0010 code (camshaft position actuator) and makes the engine shake like mad while idle, if i plug the connector in then it gets even more mental! thanks in advance!

Car is a 1.8tsi l&k mk2 pre FL octavia petrol manual

I'm not quite sure what question you are asking.

Look on page 13

The ~100mm round thing that the connector plugs into is what VW call the N205 Variable timing solenoid valve.  I'm not sure why they call it a valve as it's just a magnetic actuator rod that works on the distributor valve (which I actually think is the real N205).

If the oil has got a bit sludgy (extended oil change intervals & short trips, etc), the magnetic actuator can seize up, as can the distributor valve.

The magnetic solenoid is easy to remove (3 screws) and you can test it by putting 12v through it and see if the pin moves in/out.  If it's seized you can squirt some penetrene into it to free it up.  If that doesn't work then replacements are about GBP50.  If you remove the N205 I'd recommend you replace the O-ring.

You need a special tool to remove the distributor valve.  This should work

Cam position indicator is at the front of the head

P0010 is an OBDII code isn't it?  VCDS scan should give a better description.

Thanks for the info brad! Yeah basically when I got the car that connector was unplugged and when i plug it in the engine starts shaking like mad so im suspecting it to be bad, so to remove the metal disc like bit all I need to do is undo the 3 torx then simply pull it? I've tryed that before and it seamed kind of stuck and I didn't want to force it! I'm not sure when the last oil change was done as ive only just got it and I bought it with that light on. Ill remove the magnetic bit then.and spray some wd40 on it and do a oil change to.see if that helps. Thanks

Yes, it just pops out.  Try and pull it evenly.  Get a new O-ring as it's already obviously got a leak.

I can't explain the crap idle  - that sounds a bit of a worry.  You really should scan it properly with VCDS.

So I undid the 3 bolts and pulled out the n205 today the bit Inside the engine slides freely but the bit on the back of the valve is stiff and ive not tryed putting 12v through it yet. Ill let you know how it goes. Thanks

Ok so I ran 12v through the n205 and it poped out removed the 12v and it dropped back in soi assume this means its ok? Ive plugged it back in and I now get p0341 camshaft position sensor A _ bank 1 CKT range/perf .... It's still hesitant to start somtimes while warm, but the CEL light seams to have cleared. Thanks

That's pretty much how it works.  12v actuates the magnet & pulls the pin outwards.

As I said before.  You are posting OBD2 codes.  You'll get more info if you scan with VCDS.  get one of the other members to scan it for you.
