How much air should be coming out of the centre console vents?

Featured Replies

Just trying to figure out if there is something wrong with my car.

When the heater is on "heat" and blowing air at you, should the same amount of air be coming out of the central vents (next to hazard lights switch) as the vents at the side near the Windows?

There is a lot less hot air that comes out of my centre ones that the side ones!

Should be the other way round really, more from the centre ones than the side ones (closer to the motor). The side ones should be about 80-90% of the strength of the centre ones.

You could pop the vents out (the whole dual vent assembly just pops out if you stick something blunt under the bottom edge and lever it up) and have a peek behind to see if there is anything obviously misaligned up the top, you may need to remove some of the dash to see further down.

All 4 of the facia front vents can be turned more or less "off" using the "up/down" control.

Yes, they operate a flap inside (in addition to the slats on the outside). That is why the movement of the up/down dial is (should be) noticeably a little stiffer near the end of it's travel, as it is pushing both the slats and the big flap closed at the same time. You can just about see it happen if you shine a torch into the vent as you close it - the flap should be straight across until the last quarter turn, then you should see it start to move just before the slats close and obscure your view.

If you pop the assembly out of the dashboard as above then you should be able to turn the dial and check the flap opens/closes from behind. Obviously if it's stuck closed then that will restrict flow. If that is not faulty, the fault will be lower down. Each vent operates independently, so if both centre vents are wheezing then the problem is probably lower down the piping.

Good pics and parts names for the whole lot here: http://workshop-manuals.com/skoda/fabia-mk1/heating_air_conditioning/heating_air_conditioning/air_conditioner/repairing_the_air_conditioning_system_passenger_compartment/summary_of_components/

You should check parts #2 and #6 are free from obstructions and working correctly, and sealing together. If they look fine, you may need to get more involved and look at the motor etc which part #9 is attached to.

I will try taking the vents out.

I recently replaced the bit that comes out as the previous one was broken. So I think it must be something further down that's broken/blocked
