Anyone changed their cigarette lighter?

Featured Replies

Mines playing up. When using sat nav or phone chargers you have to wiggle the plug around to get power and the lighter element itself doesn't work unless you hold the button down.

I've ordered a replacement but just wondering if it is a centre console out job or if it is friction fitted/ screwed in?

I don't think the lighter is suppose to latch in on these cars, I've had a few cars that have done this with perfectly fine sockets, You just have to hold it in until it gets hot

Have you had a look inside your current socket to see if anything looks wrong with the contacts?

I think it clips into place, you may need to get to the back of it to un-clip it but I could be wrong

It used to stay in until hot. It's the original cigarette lighter and I don't think the previous owners were the cleanest of people so there's 13 years of crust and grime in the bottom. Plus the part of the green trim around the outside is broken so may as well replace it and tidy it a little.

Not too worried if I have to take the centre console and jumbo box etc out, just rather not do it and risk creaks and rattles if not needed. I know with some the top half unscrews then just pull the base out but I've not tried on this yet.

I didn't find it easy to get out when I had the centre console out of the car. The green bit holds the inner metal part with small plastic 'pins'. I found it a bit easier with the bulb holder removed from the side. The hole it goes in has a flat section so they only fit one way.

You could just try bending the side contacts inwards a little to see if it will grip again. Careful not to short it out as it's always live not switched with the ignition.

Yeah I had a little play but removed the fuse first. Bent the pins and could pull the cigarette lighter out expecting plugs on the bottom, however, for some reason the wires were soldered to the bottom of the cigarette lighter so will probably have to remove the console so I can get better access to cut wires an add spade connectors instead.

I had my center console out to remove mine and it was a right pain to remove the socket, i basicly broke the socket to remove it so not to damage the center console,

the wires are soldered to the bottom but have a proper conector 3" along the wires so no need to cut anything.

yes it is only push fit but has stiff locating luggs

IIRC the plug is attached to the underside of the centre console in a plastic clip.
