Physically raising seats...

Featured Replies

Ok this may sound like a strange question.... but uncle wants to raise his seats in his Audi A4 higher... but im not talking about with the kn-obs as he has it on the highest setting.... he wants to raise the actual rails by an inch or so but the question is... are the airbags fed of an 'all in one' wire ie pos/neg or just pos with a ground off the metal work of the seat? as raising the seats will affect grounding.

Thanks in advance

buy a cushion to sit on.

he has.. but he really wants to raise it properly... think he feels stupid siting on a cusion in an audi lol... not that he'll admit it!

Shorty :D

What about a booster seat instead then?

  You think we havn't already told him that!!!

I think the airbag mechanism would be fine as far as grounding. However I'd be very weary of moving the seat outside of it's intended adjustment as it will never have been crash tested for that arrangement.

A very good point, don't think his thought of that... will have to tell him

How tall is he?

I'm only 5'6" and always have the seat fully down in all the cars I drive.

5' His getting on though and wants a high driving position

I doubt he'll be much worse off if crash testing's the worry. I don't think they test or design outside of certain driver height ranges. (I'm well over 6ft. and drive a Felicia because it's one of the few cars I can get in and drive comfortably.) He may be better off if the seat is properly raised rather than sitting on Heath-Robinson type concoctions of cushions and boosters.

His seat belt and seat and the relative position of his head and upper body to the steering wheel should be his main concern. Get all those right by raising the seat and he should be safer and better able to see as it will reposition him at the correct height that the crash tests are done for.

It may be a problem if someone else needs to drive the car but for 90% of the time that probably won't be an issue.

I should have been more specific. Rather than actually crash testing I was more concerned about the interaction between side airbag and seatbelt as the seatbelt fixing point on the B pillar will be retained but the side airbag will be rasied above normal parameters and there could be interference between the two in the event of deployment.

Don't forget he'll have to advise his insurers, they would probably reject any claim made otherwise.
