Favorit overheating issues

Featured Replies

I'm new to this forum so please be gentle with me. I had an 'L' reg GLX ie hatchback that had done about 87,000 miles. The temperature gauge was always going up and down & on the up bit went very close to the red then dropped back. Any way to cut a long story short I was cruising along a bit of dual carriage way when I looked down at the gauge and it was right into the red so I pulled over and that was its lot (completely seized). The heater had also been having issues. It had the correct amount of water in the cooling system and all seemed well mechanically. After that car went bang I bought a GLX ie estate with 78,000 on the clock and bugger me if it isn't starting to show the same problem. Is there a know fault or am I just very unlucky ? If any one has any idea's on solving this it would be much appreciated.:( :(

Could it be a problem with the thermostat?

Headgaskets and thermostats are both common.

Rad fan working at all?

Thermostats fine (radiators hot). The water & oil look free from any pollutants so I assume the head gasket is okay. The fan works fine also, though on the previous Favorit mentioned it didn't so I had wired it to be on all the time !

I own a 1998 Felicia 1.6Glxi. (VW AEE Engine).

I recently had to replace a failed thermostat housing.

I also replaced with a new Quinton Hazell Thermostat which operated extremely poorly - i.e the temperature fluctuated between normal and just below the red.

I replaced with the original VAG part and temperature was just below normal and stable - worked fine.

Just a thought - although this may be a different type of thermostat.

Would it be worth running it with the thermostat removed?

I've had a couple of Austin 1100s over the years (mini engine) and the proper thermostats for them had a small hole with a jiggle pin in it so that there was never an air lock below the 'stat when it was closed, ie it never fully closed. Some of the aftermarket thermostats didn't have this. I don't know if it really made a difference to how the thermostat worked but I always used to drill them with a small hole if there wasn't one.

I've not been with the Felicias as long so not sure if it's the same but I imagine things aren't too different.

I'm starting to think that fitting aftermarket parts can often be a false economy.

for my 120 and 136's skoda used to drill a hole to stop air locks, but that was coz the engine water circulation was so vaste! a fav or fel i would have thought not needed?

Sorry I don't understand.

I have the 1.6 Felicia which has the engine code AEE.

What do you mean?

i think you will find that you have a blockage in the heater radiator, if this is blocked then the cooling system will not be able to self bleed it's self, get a new heater radiator about 35 squids and all should be fine.

Sorry I don't understand.

I have the 1.6 Felicia which has the engine code AEE.

What do you mean?

1.6 petrol = AEE

1.9 diesel = AEF

1.6 petrol = AEE

1.9 diesel = AEF
