Skoda Fabia 5th gear rattle

Featured Replies

Morning, I'm new to the forums so apologies if this had already been posted.

I have owned my Fabia Estate (2010) Cr105 for about 2 months. I have recently noticed when I'm in 5th gear (more so at lower rpm and 5th gear only) there appears to be a metalic-type rattle coming from the front somewhere. More noticeable when the passengers side window is down. Any ideas what this could be? Seems to be there when you put load on the engine.

Two recent servicing trips to skoda and nothing was mentioned.

Many thanks in advance, Ian

is it worse on a slight incline at <2000 rpm?

what mileage is the car?

Ian, welcome to the forum. I've heard the noise you speak of on several cr105's. Each time it's been because the owner has been driving in 5th gear at too low a speed. The cr105 engine cannot be treated in the same way as earlier older diesel engines where they will run at low revs without protest. That noise is the engine and transmission objecting to what you are doing. 5th gear is an overdrive gear and shouldn't be used under 50mph at the very least, irrespective of what any dash gear change lights show.  Hope that helps.

I used to have a pinking type noise on my old 04 Touran 1.9tdi, the noise was less apparent with high octane diesel or an octane booster

That would be a Cetane Booster with diesel, not an Octane Boost.

Thank you for your replies.  The car has done just over 52,000 miles.  Not sure about the slight incline but I don't hear it at higher rpm in 5th (With the windows down, the wind noise is greater due to the greater speeds - overpowers it IF it's still there).  Still getting used to diesel power and the tall gearing of the car (had a MK6 ZS Fiesta prior, which has very short gear ratios and screamed at 70mph).  Overall i'm happy with the car,  could have been a rattly heat shield as i'm by far no expert.  It has zero effect on how the car drives but being new to Skoda, I didn't know if it was a common thing etc etc.

Wot he said :)

I use the ECP stuff at £4 a bottle.
