2.0 tsi starting issues with engine warning light

Featured Replies

Hi all, as per the title the car takes a little longer than it should starting and the engine check light comes on. If the fault is cleared the car starts fine but the fault comes back again after a few starts. Any ideas?!

Thanks

Welcome to the forum.

You really need to find the out what the fault code is before anybody can help you. If you don't have the required software or a code reader there may be somebody close by that can help you if you look on the VCDS map on the forum

Yeah what's the fault if it's p0016 then stop starting/driving it and look at getting your tensioner and chain replaced. Assuming it's a tsi and not a tsfi obviously.

I will try and get hold of the exact code. Its definitely a timing issue code I think related to the crank sensor. Will post back when I find it

Yeah stop driving/starting it before it causes any serious damage. Get the chain and tensioner changed and you should get away with it.

I'm currently in the same situation except mine won't start anymore so I'm replacing those parts and praying it's still okay.

Its juat been at a garage who reckons that the chain and tensioner is spot on so now I'm confused!

The 2.0TSI engine is prone to timing chain tensioner failure which in turn usually results in catastrophic engine damage. Numerous instances of this are in the first link below. If your garage did not remove the lower cover of the timing chain, as detailed in the second link below, then I would take their opinion of your car's chain and tensioner with a very large pinch of salt.

Best case scenario is its just a faulty crank sensor but it would be a wise move to make sure the chain and tensioner are ok

Yeah I'd like to know what the garage did to test. If you can get a compression tester you can do a test yourself which is really easy to do. If you see a difference in compression on a cylinder you know you have a timing issue.

I seriously would be very cautious about using the car though.
