brown coolant

Featured Replies

Hi I was wondering if anybody has come across the coolant going brown on a Octavia 1.9 TDi BXE engine please

The car runs perfectly and no other fluid levels change and the coolant level stays the same but just turns a horrible brown colour.

How long have you had the car ? has it had some sort of leak stop been added to the coolant before your ownership these can make the water a muddy colour.

Hi, thank you for the reply

I have had the car for just over 3 years and all has been good until now. It was flushed out about 2 weeks a go but has gone brown again.

Only time I've ever seen this was on my very old VW polo (1980's A reg) and on thar the head gasket had gone. I really hope thats not the case for you...

I would take it into a garage and get them to do a test on the coolant for the presence of combustion gases, if so then I'm afraid you are looking at head gasket failure.
