Rns315 mic not working

I have recently purchased a 2nd hand rns315 and seperate mic for my car. All aspects seem to work but when I call someone they can only just hear me. I have tried a new mic and the same issue occurred. I think I am plugging into correct place as it seems to work it's just very quiet and slightly muffled. Any suggestions?
