gasoline/sprinkler fluid odor in cabin

Featured Replies

These past few days, if had a spirity odor in my cabin, when entering the car in the morning or afternoon. It is not noticable after a few minutes of driving, nor is it present if the car  has stood still a short while, like when I work out for about an hour. There a no wet pools underneath the car, nor does there seem to be a leak in the sprinkler system. How would I go about troubleshooting this?

Is the air con/climate cooling  still working?

Yes, no problems there. Still cooling almost immediately after starting.

Probably rules out a refrigerant problem

Fuel filter changed recentley? - Any thing else changed/serviced?

Slight exhaust leak combined with an active regen can cause fuel smells

At this time of the year there should be a clear water pool under the car after running with the air con on - air con condensate drain blocked? wet carpets?

Anything in the trunk area that could have leaked? Did you carry anything back there that could have spilled? Check the spare wheel area - you'd be surprised what can be left there and forgotten (cleaning stuff, various automotive body fluids - especially if the car has had a previous owner).

If the smell still isn't located, drop the protection cover under the engine. Small leaks can be missed as the fluids leak down onto the cover and then the engine heat evaporates them off - producing smells while it does it.

check around the  fuel filter under the bonnet and under the plastic cover on top of the engine for leaks
