Second hand Superb - good buy ?

Featured Replies

Thanks for those that replied to my request for info on split rear seats.

The car my friend has been to look, (I did not go with him) at was in a dealers (independent) it has 85k miles on, is an 04 53 plate 1.9TDI Superb Elegance with FSH and is priced at

I can't really shed any light on your specific points (as I don't have one), apart from 85k in 2yrs is some hellish mileage

The majority of that has surely been a m/way speed, but all the same, I'd spend the extra £1200 on one with 54k less on the clock.

1.Should the car have an alloy wheel as a spare, or steel ?

Steel spare.

2.There appears to be circular marks around the drivers door lock/handle as if keys have been used to open it (on a bunch) instead of the remote' date='anyone suggest any likely cause? [/quote']

I would guess they have been using the key instead of the remote!! or an attempted break in? just make sure 1 key opens everything.

3.Does the car seem reasonably priced ?

Seems quite a reasonable price' date=' Classic models regularly change hands here for 7-9k with between 30 and 80k on the clock, so for an elegance thats quite good.

4. Anyone have expierience of 85k miles and what to look for when giving it a good looking at ?

Just check all the usual things, only specific things I can think of is check for stiff boot struts (makes opening stiff). mines done well over 90k now but apart from a knocking ball joint it still drives as it did when it left the factory, the interior isn't particularly hard wearing so if it's been used as a cab you will notice the rubberised coating on the door handle surrounds (inside) peeling, same on the door pulls themselves, and the rear airvent/heated seat control/cigar lighter panel peels to with to many feet brushing past it.

5. Passenger side interior front door handle has scratches on' date=' is this normal for this age/milage ? [/quote']

Depends what you mean by scratches? if on the chrome handle itself then its probably just where someone has been wearing a ring, pretty insignificant if its isolated to the one handle.

6. Finally, he has an option to buy another superb which is an 03 53 plate with 31k miles, same 1.9tdi Elegance but priced at

On Point 5, if the scratches are on the door pull, then that would be normal(ish). my old Passat did the same at 50K. VAG put a thin layer of rubbbery material on the plastic which makes them feel higher quality. unfortunately they are not so durable, may be worth getting them replaced!

Just a few pointers: I got my 03 plate superb elegance 2.6 V6 with all the available trimmings (electric tilting sunroof etc etc.) last November for a shade under

I'd opt for the lower mileage one, not that I'd be put off by one with 85k on the clock!

One down my way in kent on an 04 in grey with 11k miles for

Don't be too concerned with the high mileage, my Superb has 95k on the clock and I bought it with 84k on the clock around 4 months ago.

As long as the car has been regularly serviced and looked after then the mileage will mean that it has just been run in!!

The only thing to bear in mind with high mileage is that the car has had a recent Cambelt Service, has it had that?

Thanks once again for the replies, we have just rung the servicing garage, who are skoda main dealers and it appears to have a full service history with a cambelt change at 72k miles ( dunno why it was early- thought it was 80k) they are going to send a hard copy of everything it`s had done and hopefully we will both go and look at it on Thurs morning. I am always worried about looking at motors for other people, in case i miss something that later proves bad !!
