Wiring in a rear facing dash cam.

Featured Replies

As I have a tow bar fitted to my Octavia is it safe to tap into the 13 pin socket wiring which is all visible in the spare wheel well to wire in my camera?

I was thinking of using the pin 10 wire, the ignition controlled supply, as this is the fridge feed so a more robust wire and will only be powering the camera when the caravan is not attached.

All that said what is the best method of tapping the wire and insulating it. I'm not overly keen on Scotchlocks or soldering?

I have a 2013 Octavia Hatchback, and have Garmin dashcams front and rear.  I used cable supplied by manufacturer and connected with a piggyback fuse plugged in to ignition  only on fuse. Had to buy extension Garmin cable. The wire can be fed up the A panel padding by windscreen, and fed along the inside bottom of the roof lining to the rear window. Easy to just pull lining out to insert wire. The only awkward bit is removing the  glove box to acquire the fuses and fitting it back properly. See manual. Also earth wire can be connected on double wire you need.  Not sure if your rear 13 pin socket is permanently on. Make sure correct amp fuse is used for dashcam. A multitester instrument will help. If you don't like soldering , cable crimp connectors can be used.

In my estate, I tapped into the rear wiper cables. That way all the cables are contained in the boot lid.

Run the wire from the rear wiper through a 12v to 5v converter that has been cable tied in the boot lid up to a hole I drilled in the top bit of trim.

How do I get the boot lid card off?

Remove the screw that holds in the pull handle, then the whole bottom bit should just pull off with effort. Just lots of clips going around the edge of the trim. Trim tools help.

For the top bit, there is an annoying plug at the bottom of each of the 2 arms of the top piece of trim. You need to push in the middle bit of those plugs. This then allows you to remove the rest of the plug (you will need to buy replacements). I can't work out how to remove these plugs without pushing the middle bits into the boot lid.

The top trim will now pull off. Again clips going all around.
