New Skoda owner

Featured Replies

hi all, I'm new to the Skoda gang. just bought my first octavia. it's the 1.9 tdi pd 105 engine on a 57 plate. only paid 2100 for her as she has 114000 on the clock but has full service history and passed every m.o.t. the car drives fantastic but I do have a few complaints about her so please advise me if it's anything to worry about. took her for a drive to the coast today and I find the ride harsh on 16" alloys. I could feel every bump and crack in the road especially in the bottom and back of the seat but it's bearable however I maybe just over sensitive because I do suffer with slight ocd and worry about my cars breaking down constantly. am I just overthinking or could it be a sign of a problem. forgot to mention on previous mot in November it had advisories for both bushes on front suspension so not sure this would cause this. secondly when I accelerate from 1500 to 2000 rpm I'm not sure if there is a very slight stutter but it's hard to judge on the road surface. Sorry to go on but I like reassurance from others when it comes to cars lol

the bushes will be what we call "console" bushes, fairly common problem area as the do do wear and the rubber does perish over time, not something to worry about but have them checked at the next service (they will be inspected at the next MOT) and maybe have them changed.

As for the ride, it should not be harsh on 16" alloys as that is a standard size fitment to the pre FL octy 2, i have an FL octy 2 on 17" (225/45/r17) and the ride is fine and i'm carrying a back injury from a year ago ( broke a vertibray), try setting the tyre pressure's to 32psi all round and see if that helps.

As for power delivery my old octy was a 2.0 tdi and the power come in smooth but punchy from about 1500rpm, should not have any hesitation or "stutter". may be worth running some fuel cleaner through it (may take a while to have any effect) or having scanned for any occuring or historic codes.

These are just a few suggestions that may of some help, both my previous and current octy's have been faultless and brilliant cars to own/drive and work on.

hi julian. thanks for the advice mate. I have checked them I was around 29 to 30 psi in each tyre I have Bridgestone turanza on front good year on rear and looks like a budget tyre as well. the car has just been serviced by faithful local mechanic who said the car was absolutely fine he did mention about the bushes but said leave them as they only have slight play and can get changed before next mot if they don't get too bad before. I have pulled up at home and revved her from 1000 rpm to 2000 rpm and there is a very slight shake doesn't make a difference with clutch in or out as I have heard of dmf problem. if i can sort the ride quality and the shaky problem the car would be amazing for the money. thanks again mate good to get some advice. sounds like you know a bit about octies

I'm an MOT tester by trade so do see quiet a few of them, funny thing is i don't a lot of MK 3 octy's, plus the MK 2 is a VW golf MK 5 underneath (just stretched a bit) and i see loads of those week in week out and they share the some faults.

If your DMF is silent and not rattling then that is all good and won't be causing the stutter, it's when they do start to rattle then you have to worry as the bill is a big one.

well I see you live miles from me pal as I'm a Yorkshire man lol because i would of fetched it for a opinion on the car. unfortunately I suffer with ocd and anxiety so I do over worry about the car breaking down. sad I know lol. when I press clutch down there is no rattling or chatter at all and the clutch biting point is below half way which I think is good. can't see the stutter being an injector as she doesn't smoke and I reset the trip computer and after a 100 mile drive I averaged 58.7 mpg so I thought mpg would be poor with a duff injector. can only think it being something like a engine or gearbox mount but don't know how to check this.

No easy way to check gearbox or engine mounts, the way we do it at work is not recommended is pretty dangerous but we have a driver in the car being pretty violent with the clutch whilst another person watches for any flex or play in the mounts, there is also 5 or 6 other people watching in case something does go wrong, you can't see nothing underneath as there is an undertray blocking the view.

With MPG as good as that, i'd say all fine on the fueling side, 58.7 is good for a 100 mile drive, my petrol gets about 41 mpg at best, it's worst 19.5 mpg ( i do have a very right foot mind)

cheers again Julian.  well I only been researching what it could be and those are what it has come back with. either the dogbone mount and maybe wiring loom for the injector but wouldn't that affect mpg. just been reading also that the octavia is built to give some road feel and that's maybe what I feel in the seat like a every bump and crack in the road.

More likely to be the dogbone mount, as a faulty loom to the injectors should bring up a pending/current or historic code, and this would flag the engine management light on.

I do get good feel and feedback through my car, more when the road surface changes which living in south east london is most of my journeys, the roads are terrible. I have found my current octy more nimble, buts thats down  to being petrol and having a lighter engine.

Lighter and more power equals more smiles for me.

yeah it is the same in Yorkshire terrible patchy roads. when I went coast yesterday on Lincoln roads it was much worse as they are awful. I tried what you said and put 32 psi all round and has helped it. I have gone on YouTube about dogbone mount and when my car idles it does something similar where the revs sit about 850 but there is a slight jolt now and then of the engine not all the time and others on YouTube do this too so I'm aiming towards that. there on no check engine lights at all. if i rev the car with clutch in or out there engine feels like it jolts a little too.
